Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the county town of Kent?

Answer: Maidstone

The county town is Maidstone, although many people assume that it must be the more famous Canterbury. Maidstone used to have various paper mills and breweries. The Fremlin Walk shopping centre is on the site of a Victorian brewery.
2. Which major shopping centre is near the A2 and M25, close to Dartford?

Answer: Bluewater

Bluewater is just across the River Thames from Lakeside Shopping Centre in Essex. The Bluewater complex is roughly triangular in shape and is sited in a former chalk quarry.
3. Which town contains a pedestrian area called The Pantiles?

Answer: Tunbridge Wells

The Pantiles is a quaint little area close to the centre of Tunbridge Wells. It has a chalybeate spring bearing iron-rich water that allegedly has health-giving properties.
4. Near which major port are the White Cliffs located?

Answer: Dover

As Vera Lynn sang, "There'll be bluebirds over the white cliffs of Dover". The white cliffs face France over the narrowest part of the English Channel.
5. Where is England's National Fruit Collection?

Answer: Brogdale

Brogdale near Faversham is home to the national collection of fruits, especially apples and pears. Appropriately, it is in the Garden of England. Brogdale has over two thousand varieties of apple.
6. Which National Trust property, famed for its gardens, is close to the town of Cranbrook?

Answer: Sissinghurst Castle

These are all beautiful National Trust properties in Kent, but it is Sissinghurst Castle that is just outside Cranbrook. Walls and hedges divide the grounds into distinct sections such as the White Garden.
7. Which heritage railway is based at Tenterden?

Answer: Kent and East Sussex Railway

The Kent and East Sussex Railway originally ran from Headcorn to Robertsbridge via Tenterden, but it was unprofitable and eventually closed down. Enthusiasts have since reopened part of the line. There is a station for visitors to the 14th century castle at Bodiam.
8. Which Kent castle sounds as if it should be in Yorkshire?

Answer: Leeds

Leeds Castle is to the east of Maidstone, near the village of Leeds. There has been a castle on the site since 1119. The major city of Leeds is a long way away in West Yorkshire in northern England.
9. Which large shingle promontory sticks out into the English Channel near Lydd?

Answer: Dungeness

Dungeness is a strange but fascinating place, with lighthouses, nuclear power stations and a steam railway. It has one of the largest expanses of shingle in Europe and contains a National Nature Reserve and a bird observatory.
10. Which short Kent motorway links two longer ones?

Answer: M26

The M26 links the M25 and the M20. Complications where the M26 meets the M25 and other roads near Sevenoaks resulted in the westbound M26/M25 section being the longest distance between motorway exit points in England.
