1. Greenland
Greenland, with an area of 822,700 square miles, is by far the largest island in the world. An autonomous territory of Denmark, it is regarded, culturally, as part of Europe, although physiologically it is actually part of North America. It had a population in the early 2020s of around 56,000, and its capital city is Nuuk.
2. New Guinea
New Guinea is located in Oceania, and is split between two nations, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. With an area of 303,381 square miles, it is the world's second largest island. There are two capital cities on the island - Port Moresby is the national capital of Papua New Guinea, whilst Jayapura is the capital of the Indonesian province of Papua.
3. Borneo
The world's third largest island, Borneo has an area of 288,869 square miles. Situated in southeast Asia, it is divided between three nations - the entire nation of Brunei, and various provinces of Malaysia and Indonesia. The largest city on the island is Samarinda, capital of the Indonesian province of East Kalimantan.
4. Madagascar
Madagascar is the largest island in the world to consist of one independent nation. With an area of 226,658 square miles, it is the fourth largest island in the world. Situated in the Indian Ocean off the east coast of Africa, its capital city is Antananarivo.
5. Baffin Island
With an area of 195,928 square miles, Baffin Island is the world's fifth largest island. It is part of the Canadian territory of Nunavut, and is home to the province's capital and largest settlement, Iqaluit, formerly known as Frobisher Bay.
6. Sumatra
Sumatra is the world's sixth largest island, and is part of the south eastern Asian nation of Indonesia. It has an area of 182,812 square miles and had a population in the early 2020s of nearly 60 million. Eight of Indonesia's provinces are located on the island, with its largest city being Medan, the capital of North Sumatra.
7. Honshu
Honshu, the world's seventh largest island, has an area of 87,200 square miles. By far the biggest of Japan's four "main" islands, it is home to many of that country's largest cities, including its capital, Tokyo.
8. Victoria Island
With an an area of 83,897 square miles, Victoria Island is the eighth largest island in the world. Located in the far north of Canada, it is divided between the territories of Nunavut and Northwest Territories. The largest settlement on the island is Cambridge Bay, which had a population in the early 2020s of less than 1,800.
9. Great Britain
The island of Great Britain is the ninth largest in the world, with an area of 80,823 square miles. Part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, it consists of the mainland parts of Scotland, England and Wales. It is the largest island of the geographical entity of the British Isles, the second largest of which, Ireland, is twentieth on the world list of largest islands.
10. Ellesmere Island
The smallest island on this list, Ellesmere Island, is the tenth largest in the world, with an area of 75,767 square miles. Canada's northernmost island, it is part of the territory of Nunavut. Its "biggest" settlement is Grise Fiord, which, at the 2016 Canadian census, had a population of just 129.
