Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Atlantic Ocean is the second largest ocean in the world, after the Pacific Ocean. What body of water connects the Atlantic with the Mediterranean Sea?

Answer: Strait of Gibraltar

Separating Spain and Morocco, the Strait of Gibraltar is only 14.3 kilometres wide at its narrowest point. It is an important route for shipping, and both Spain and Morocco have explored the possibilities of linking the two countries, and indeed the two continents, via a bridge or tunnel.
2. Where in the world would you find the Amundsen Sea?

Answer: Antarctica

Named, of course, after the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen who was the first to reach the South Pole, the Amundsen Sea is located off the coast of western Antarctica. Scientists have observed increased glacial flow in the area, but the exact cause is unknown.

Some scientists believe it to be because of undersea volcanic activity, while others attribute it to deep ocean water welling up as a result of global warming.
3. What is the name of the longest river in Europe?

Answer: Volga

The Volga River begins in Tver Oblast in northwestern Russia and flows right the way through the country to the Caspian Sea, some 3,600 kilometres away. The Volga has played a large role in history, and was used extensively by both German and Soviet troops during the Battle of Stalingrad, regarded as the bloodiest battle in human history.
4. The Milford Sound, a fjord in the Southern Hemisphere, can be found in which country?

Answer: New Zealand

Rudyard Kipling once called the Milford Sound the eighth Wonder of the World. No wonder it's New Zealand's most famous tourist destination. Located in the South Island of New Zealand, the Milford Sound is fed by the Tasman Sea and stretches 15 kilometres inland from its mouth at Dale Point.
5. The English Channel separates England from France, but what name is given to the area where these two countries are closest, separated by a distance of only 34 kilometres?

Answer: Strait of Dover

Lying between the English town of Dover and the French town of Calais is the Strait of Dover. The strait is closely monitored by coastguards due to it being the busiest international seaway in the world. This body of water is frequented by people wishing to swim the Channel, as well as people travelling to and from each country via the ferry or tunnel.
6. Which of these lakes is NOT one of the North American Great Lakes?

Answer: Lake Victoria

Lake Victoria is the largest lake in Africa. The five Great Lakes of North America are Michigan, Superior, Huron, Erie and Ontario. These lakes lie on the border of the USA and Canada, and are the largest group of freshwater lakes in the world in terms of surface area, not volume.
7. What is notable about the Caspian Sea?

Answer: It is the largest enclosed body of water in the world

For those playing along at home, the Caspian Sea houses an incredible 69,400 cu km of water over an area of around 370,000 sq km. It is fed by several rivers, including the Volga, the Ural, the Kura, and the Terek rivers. The sea is named after the Caspi people who lived nearby in an area called South Caucasus, and not, as my friend thought, named after the character from C.S. Lewis' "Narnia" series.
8. Which body of water lies between Australia and Indonesia?

Answer: Arafura Sea

Situated off the northern coast of the Northern Territory in Australia, the Arafura Sea is bounded by the Gulf of Carpentaria, the Coral Sea, the Timor Sea, the Banda Sea, and the Ceram Sea.
9. Which of these countries does not border the Bay of Bengal?

Answer: Vietnam

The Bay of Bengal is the largest bay in the world, with a surface area of over 2,000,000 sq km. Historically, it was the British East India Company that started one of the first trading campaigns in the bay, with other such companies such as the French East India Company following suit.
10. Which of these is a sea that lies between Canada and Greenland?

Answer: Labrador Sea

The Labrador sea is part of the Atlantic Ocean and lies between the Labrador Peninsula in Canada and Greenland. To the north is the Davis Strait and Baffin Bay, and to the south is the mighty Atlantic. Its proximity to the Arctic Circle makes it quite a cold body of water, with temperatures ranging from -2°C to 6°C.
