Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Tampa Bay" is the actual and official name for the tri-city area of Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Clearwater?

Answer: False

The Tampa Bay is a body of water that is located off of the Gulf of Mexico and is between both Tampa and Clearwater as well as Tampa and St. Petersburg. Many of the sports teams in the area have a city name of "Tampa Bay" and as a result, many people have incorrectly assumed that Tampa Bay was a city or an area.
2. Which of the following theme parks would you find in the city of Tampa?

Answer: Busch Gardens

There is one other Busch Gardens theme park and it is in Williamsburg, Virginia. The one in Tampa, off of Busch Boulevard, is a safari in addition to being a theme park. The main roller coaster attractions are "The Montu" (an introverted roller coaster with an Egyptian theme) and "The Kumba" (which goes 68 miles an hour and has a 108 foot vertical loop).
3. What is the name of the main street in Tampa that starts in North Tampa, ends in South Tampa, and crosses over Raymond James Stadium?

Answer: Dale Mabry

Dale Mabry Highway gets divided from North to South at Kennedy Street (Rt. 60), which is south of Raymond James Stadium.
4. What is the city that is an hour to an hour and a half east of Tampa, down I-4?

Answer: Orlando

An hour east (without traffic) is Orlando, which boasts Disney World, which can be seen from I-4. Church Street Station is another nightly attraction there. Orlando is in central Florida. Jacksonville is more northeast and Miami and Ft. Lauderdale are about three and a half hours southeast.
5. What is the name of the historic part of Tampa, known for its cigars, which has turned into a downtown nightlife area?

Answer: Ybor City

Ybor City is still preserved as the city that it was when Cubans lived there in the 1890's. It is an interesting place to walk around by day. At night, it turns into a mini "Mardi Gras", or it did when I used to go out (around 1995-1998).
6. The Tampa area is famous for which of these weather occurrences?

Answer: Lightning

This area gets hit with more lightning than any other in the United States. The frequency of lightning is most common in the summer, which is June through September. As a New Yorker, I used to love the summers and hate the winters. Here, it is the opposite.
7. In 2003, the Tampa-Clearwater-St. Petersburg area had three out of the four major sports teams in the United States? (Baseball, NFL football, basketball, and hockey).

Answer: True

The Tampa area has had the Tampa Bay Rays, which have played in St. Petersburg, as a Major League Baseball team; the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who defeated the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVII, by the score of 48-21; and the Tampa Bay Lightning who play hockey in the NHL. There is no NBA franchise in Tampa, but Orlando is more than an hour away and hosts the Orlando Magic.
8. How long is the Courtney Campbell Causeway that connects Tampa with Clearwater?

Answer: Less than 10 miles

This is Rt.60 as it crosses the bay. It changes from Kennedy, on the Tampa side of the bridge, to Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard, on the Clearwater side. This is also known as the Causeway.

9. Which baseball franchise has its spring training in Tampa?

Answer: The Yankees

The Yankees have a stadium across from Raymond James called Legends Field. It is a mini-replica of Yankee Stadium. During spring training they are the toast of the town. George Steinbrenner, the owner of the team, lives there as well.
10. Tampa is in Palm Beach County, which is the area that was held responsible for holding up the Bush-Gore election results of 2000.

Answer: False

Tampa is in Hillsborough County. Palm Beach includes West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, and Wellington.
