Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. To start, Wrong Way Jose takes a taxi to Benito Juarez Airport, also known as Mexico City International, which is about 3 miles outside of the city limits. This is where he will begin his month-long world tour. He plans to stay in Quito, Ecuador, for 3 or 4 days, mostly to visit El Panecillo in order to see a monument of the Virgin Mary there, since Jose is a devout Catholic. When in flight Wrong Way tells stewardess Inga that the plane should be going north. "North? No, no, no. We're not going north, we're going...." Which is the shortest direction that Inga tells Jose that Quito is from Mexico City?

Answer: Southeast

The monument of the Virgin Mary is visible from most of the city of Quito. It is 9,898 feet above sea level. The central square of Quito is located about 16 miles south of the equator. The city itself extends to within about one kilometer from zero latitude. Ecuador is Spanish for equator.
2. Onward to Africa. Wrong Way Jose, for as long as he had remembered, had always wanted to hike the paths that Stanley did while searching for Livingstone. To do so meant he had to take a flight to Tanzania by way of the Kilimanjaro International Airport. What direction did "Wrong Way's flight have to go to reach its final destination in Tanzania from Quito?

Answer: Due east

Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) calls itself the "Gateway to Africa's Wildlife Heritage." By the way, Stanley found Livingstone on November 10, 1871, in Ujiji near Lake Tanganyika in present-day Tanzania. It has been said that he greeted Livingstone with the now-famous line, "Doctor Livingstone, I presume?"
3. After partaking of dinner with a group of locals in Tanzania, Wrong Way felt a little uncomfortable and quickly decided he didn't want to actually become part of the main course, so he quickly rented a car from Sixt Car Hire and headed out to find the sand dunes of Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert. What general direction did Wrong Way have to go from Tanzania to Sossusvlei?

Answer: Southwest

Sossusvlei is a dry lake most of the time, except when the Tsauchab River flows through the Sesriem Canyon after extensive rainy seasons. This occurs about every 5 to 10 years. Sossusvlei is located next to the Namib Desert which is one of the oldest deserts in the world. Some of the world's tallest sand dunes are found in the Namib Desert.
4. After some R and R in Namibia, Wrong Way had an yearning to fly to Iwo Jima via Tokyo to study his favorite subject, WWII history, but found after landing in Tokyo he wasn't legally allowed to fly in to Iwo Jima at all. Evidently not just anyone is allowed to visit Iwo Jima. Who - listed among the answers given - are NOT allowed to visit the island of Iwo Jima?

Answer: Those taking general cruise vacations from Japan

The United States - according to Robert S. Norris, William M. Arkin, and William Burr who wrote for the "Bulletin of Atomic Scientists" as early as 1990 - still use Iwo Jima to keep bombs stored there. However - if this is in fact true - they lack their plutonium or uranium cores. Their other argument is that technically the nuclear-armed vessels off land were legally an inch away from Japanese land. This is supposed to be how the United States technically proved that the there were no nuclear weapons actually in Japan.

Iwo Jima is still considered part of Tokyo. Iwo Jima is now called Ioto (sulfur island). In February of 1945, the U.S. Marines landed there and fought against the Japanese Imperial forces until March, when they finally controlled the island. The top of Mount Suribachi was where the raising of the American flag - and the iconic photo "Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima" - took place.
5. Enough of history, this is about Wrong Way's experiences! I want to know when leaving Namibia by way of Air Namibia, what general direction did Wrong Way have to fly to reach his destination of Tokyo, Japan, in his course to try to travel to Iwo Jima?

Answer: Northeast

According to Google Maps, a flight from Namibia to Tokyo, Japan would take nearly 27 hours with a few stops in between. A typical flight would leave from Walvis Bay, Namibia with a hop to Johannesburg, South Africa. After settling there for a while, your connecting flight would likely be directed to Beijing, China, and then, finally to Tokyo. It would not be fun.
6. Wrong Way suffered through the grueling 27 hour flight to Tokyo, but still understands he has a ways to go to reach his next destination, Iwo Jima. He notices on his Atlas map that Iwo Jima is almost in a straight line from Tokyo, Japan. But where is Iwo Jima in relation to Tokyo on a map?

Answer: Due south

Iwo Jima is 650 nautical miles south of mainland Tokyo and is governed as part of Ogasawara, one of the eight villages of Tokyo. Iwo Jima is considered uninhabited. The memorial at Iwo Jima is situated where the American flag was raised on February 12, 1945.
7. Wrong Way really was feeling like a island vacation since he missed out on visiting Iwo Jima. Now he wants to rest a little and visit Tahiti for some diving off the coast of Bora Bora. What direction from Tokyo does Wrong Way need to travel by plane?

Answer: Southeast

Air Tahiti Nui (TN) has direct flights from Tokyo to Papeete twice per week and it's an 11 hour trip. Flights leave from Tokyo on Saturday and Monday (2015 schedule). Air Tahiti Nui Flights from Japan arrive in Papeete in the morning, around 8.30am. Return flights to Tokyo leave Papeete on Friday and Sunday.

Zika fever outbreaks are quite common when visiting Tahiti. It is similar to dengue fever as it is contracted by mosquito bites.
8. Wrong Way has a cousin who lives part of the year working in the crab industry on St. Paul Island, in the Bering Sea. To get there though he has to fly from Tahiti to Los Angeles, and then to Nome, Alaska. Talk about extreme climate differences! Believe it or not it's over a day long (24 hour) trip by plane. Can you help Wrong Way find Nome and tell me what direction Nome is from Tahiti?

Answer: North

Usually a flight from Nome (OME) to Anchorage (ANC) Alaska is going to have a full night layover in Anchorage. The next day you take your connecting flight to St Paul Island by propeller airplane.

It's interesting to note that the island is the scene in Rudyard Kipling's story "The White Seal." The poem "Lukannon" in The Jungle Book is about the seals of St. Paul Island and how they continue singing even though the sealers are there to club and kill them in what the poem calls, the "two million strong."
9. Wrong Way made yet another poor decision thinking he could fly directly to the Lake Baikal region in Siberia, Russia, by flying south eastward to Los Angeles. His travel guide finally reasoned with Wrong Way that he could fly directly from Anchorage, Alaska to Angarsk in Irkutsk Oblast - a federal subject - located in Siberia, Russia. What direction did Wrong Way travel from Anchorage to Angarsk?

Answer: West

Lake Baikal is known for being the world's deepest lake, but also is considered the oldest. It is located in southeast Siberia, just north of Mongolia.
10. After his month long world wide vacation, Wrong Way Jose is finally heading back home to Mexico City, Mexico. The continuous twisting and turning in the helicopter gave Wrong Way an acute case of vertigo, making his somewhat poor choices of direction even more questionable. To get home from Angarsk, Russia back to Mexico City, Mexico, what direction would be the shortest for Wrong Way's flight to travel?

Answer: Southeast

Southwest is also a direction you could take but it would be longer in distance. A typical flight would take you from Irkutsk Oblast, Russia (IKT) to Moscow (SVO), and then from Moscow (SVO) to Los Angeles (LAX). Your final leg would then go from Los Angeles (LAX) to Mexico City (MEX), and finally to home.
