Answer: Australia

MV Tampa was turned away in August 2001. Three further vessels were turned away in October.
2. In May 2001, in which African city were 126 people killed in a stampede?

Answer: Accra

Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko were playing in the Accra Sports Stadium. Fans rioted. The police fired tear gas into the crowd which panicked causing this appalling stampede. In a government enquiry six police were charged with manslaughter.
3. Which Pacific islands were threatened by an oil spillage in January 2001?

Answer: Galapagos

An oil tanker, Jessica, spilled nearly 200,000 gallons of fuel. Mercifully, a major catastrophe was averted. At the request of the Ecuador government WWF's Dr. Carlos Valle has been leading all wildlife rescue and rehabilitation.
4. Up to 100,000 people lost their lives in a major earthquake in Gujurat in India?

The quake measured 7.9 on the Richter scale. There were 188 after shocks, fifteen of which measured 5 on the same scale.

A cyclone moved in over southern Africa, it brought three weeks of severe floods. Waters rose 26 feet in 5 days, destroying much of the farmland and infrastructure.

The sub had sunk in 2000 with a loss of 118 lives. The Dutch company Mammoet in co-operation with Smit International salvaged the 'Kursk', and brought it to dry dock near Murmansk. The salvage was a monumental achievement in maritime terms, but not for the relatives who grieved a second time.

The fire began after someone apparently set off a fire cracker in a crowded street to test it. It, in turn, set off other fireworks and a huge series of explosions ignited four blocks.
