Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Early in its career the U.S. B26 Marauder earned this nickname.

Answer: Widowmaker

Due to the extremely high wing loading and advanced design, the Marauder got off to a very rocky start with new pilots and aircrews. Another notable name was the "Flying Prostitute". Aircrews saw the small wings and noted the B26 had no visible means of support!
2. The Marauder was a high performance bomber designed in the late 1930's. The U.S. Army Air Corps, realizing all the new innovations proposed in the design, ordered how many prototypes prior to full production?

Answer: 0

Martin's design 179 blew away all the other proposals for a new medium bomber requested by the Army. Design 179 was faster than the Army's requirement and carried nearly double the bomb load specified. The Air Corps ordered immediate production and design 179 went from drawing board to full production without a prototype.
3. The Marauder saw service in all theaters of action in WWII. Which theater did it see action first?

Answer: Southwest Pacific

Immediately after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Army Air Corps transferred B26A's to Australia where missions were flown against the Japanese in New Guinea.
4. The Glenn L. Martin Aircraft company needed to fill a large wartime production order of Marauders. What two cities produced the majority of B26's?

Answer: Baltimore and Omaha

Martin opened a second factory in Omaha to help produce B26's. Martin's original factory in Baltimore was producing both the Martin Marauder and the Martin Baltimore. Just over 5,000 B26's were built and nearly 2,000 of those came from the Omaha plant.
5. Picture the beautiful B26 in your mind. Now tell me the official wing position description.

Answer: Shoulder wing monoplane

Not quite a high wing layout, the B26 was described as a shoulder wing monoplane. The B25 Mitchell was described as a mid wing monoplane.
6. To help with handling at low speeds and landing, the B26 went through what three major changes?

Answer: Lengthened wings- increased tail area- increased wing incidence

Increasing the wingspan and tail area were immediate attempts at helping the "Widowmaker". Increasing the wing incidence by 3.5 degrees also helped, but that cut the B26 top speed down sharply. 276 mph was the new rated top speed after the wing angle of attack was modified.
7. The B26 Marauder served well in all of its deployed theaters. Can you tell me why it was pulled from the Pacific theater so quickly?

Answer: Long take off runs

With its high wing loading, the B26 needed a long runway in muggy tropical conditions. Runways were premium real estate in the island hopping campaign of the Pacific. With the B26's being pulled out the B25 Mitchell came into its own in the Pacific theater.
8. After WWII the Marauder faded quickly from many services. It did provide yeoman duties in many countries during the following years. What country went as far as using the B26 as a jet testbed?

Answer: France

The stigma of being "too hot to handle" never really left the B26. After the war they were quickly decommissioned in the United States. France and other countries continued using the B26 in many support roles. The French aviation industry in the early 1950's went as far as mounting a Avtar jet engine in the tail, using the Marauder as a make shift testbed.
9. The Army Air Corps was eager to get their advanced B26 into action. Can you name the first major battle that the Marauder participated in?

Answer: Battle of Midway

The B26 saw anti-shipping action during the Battle of Midway. They carried out torpedo attacks against Japanese ships. Remember the Aleutians were also attacked during the Battle of Midway as the Japanese hoped to lure American forces to the north.
10. With an experienced aircrew the B26 handled superbly at speed and altitude. Being the true thoroughbred that it was, in what theater had the B26 actually been employed as an interceptor?

Answer: Mediterranean

Believe it or not, the British not only used the Marauders long range and firepower in the Mediterranean theater as a bomber and recon aircraft, they also used B26's to aggressively hunt and engage German and Italian air transports trying to resupply ground troops in North Africa. There were numerous air to air victories for the B26 aircrews.
