1. 1973 saw Australia's population grow to over thirteen and a half million people and inflation was a whopping 13.2%. By how much would an average three bedroom home have set you back in 1973?

2. Which Brisbane nightclub was the scene of one of Australia's worst mass murders in 1973?

Answer: Whiskey Au Go-Go

On 8th March 1973, fifteen people died in the fire-bombing of the Whisky Au Go-Go nightclub at Fortitude Valley. John Stuart and James Finch were convicted of arson and murder, and sentenced to life imprisonment. It is alleged they greased the handles on the fire escape door to prevent people escaping.
3. Which legendary British pop group toured Australia for the third time in 1973?

Answer: The Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones arrived on 9th February 1973 for their third Australian tour. On arriving in Sydney in early February, they were met with their first press conference, prior to performing in New Zealand two days later. Concerts in Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth followed, with their last two concerts in Sydney at the end of the month.
4. Where did Australia's first legal casino open in 1973?

Answer: Hobart

The Wrest Point Casino opened in Hobart on 10th February 1973. Perched on the shores of the Derwent River, the site was originally home to a hotel by the name of the Wrest Point Riviera.
5. Which 'soapie' star had a top ten hit with "Je t'aime" in 1973?

Answer: Abigail

Abigail played the role of Bev Houghton in "Number 96", and just after her departure from the show she released (and had a top-ten hit with) her version of the song "Je t'aime".
6. Adelaide was stunned by another multiple child kidnapping. Who where they?

Answer: Joanne Ratcliffe and Kirste Gordon

On 25th August 1973, Joanne Ratcliffe aged 11, and Kirste Gordon, aged just 4, were abducted from an Adelaide Oval while attending a football match with their families. Their bodies have never been found. The Beaumont children disappeared from Glenelg beach in Adelaide in 1966.

The Truro murders occurred in the latter part of the 1970s and the Faraday School kidnapping happened in Victoria.
7. A new bank note was introduced in Australia in 1973. Which denomination was it?

Answer: $50

The $50 note went into circulation in October 1973. The front of the $50 note depicted Lord Florey, an Adelaide born pathologist. He played a vital role in the development of penicillin, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine in 1945.

The back of the note symbolised research into the environment and outer space, with a portrait of Sir Ian Clunies Ross. A veterinary scientist, known for his work on parasites affecting livestock and his role in the CSIRO.
8. 1973 saw the official opening of which Australian cultural landmark in Sydney?

Answer: Opera House

The Sydney Opera House was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 20th October 1973. Designed by Danish architect Joern Utzon, its construction had begun 14 years earlier, in 1959. His design was in fact beyond the capabilities of engineering of the time and it wasn't until 1961, after spending a couple of years re-working his plans, did he solve the problem of how to build the unique 'sails' feature.
9. Which quiz show host won the Gold Logie for 1973?

Answer: Tony Barber

Tony Barber won the gold in 1973 due to his success on the "Great Temptation", which he hosted with Barbie Rogers. It was a massive hit, with channel Seven airing both daytime and prime time editions of the programme.
10. What was the #1 song in Australia for 1973?

Answer: "Tie A Yellow Ribbon 'Round The Old Oak Tree" by Dawn

"Tie A Yellow Ribbon 'Round The Old Oak Tree" by Dawn, spent seven weeks occupying the number one position in 1973. Incidentally, the song was inspired by a story from a 1971 article in the "New York Post". It was actually a white handkerchief tied around a tree, but they made it a yellow ribbon because it made for a better song.
