Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Federation of Australia came into being when all the different colonies joined together to become one nation under a Commonwealth Government. When did this occur?

Answer: 1st January, 1901

Before Federation each colony (or State) had its own laws, policies, etc. Western Australia were worried that if Australia federated, it would be dominated by the eastern states (such as New South Wales and Victoria).
2. Many people know that Australia's first Prime Minister was Edmund Barton (who was Prime Minister from 1901 - 1903). But who succeeded him?

Answer: Alfred Deakin

Deakin was Prime Minister three times: 1903-1904, 1905-1908 and 1909-1910.
3. Australia was the second country to allow women to vote in Federal elections (New Zealand being the first country to allow this in 1893). Which Australian State first allowed women to vote?

Answer: South Australia

Women were first allowed to vote in Australia's federal elections in 1902. The United States of America didn't allow this until 1920, and France didn't allow women to vote till 1945(!).
4. When Australia federated all the colonies (now called States) agreed on one point: that Australia would not allow "coloured" people to come into the country. What Law was passed to enforce this?

Answer: The Immigration Restriction Act

Unfortunately, for most of the 20th Century this was one of the facts about Australia most widely known in the rest of the world. So much for "For those who come across the seas, we've boundless plains to share ..." (from Australia's National Anthem "Advance, Australia Fair")
5. World War I (1914-18) - also nicknamed the "War to End all Wars" (yeah, right) - was thought to be Australia's first chance to prove itself as a nation. On the 25th April 1915 the ANZACS (Australia and New Zealand Army Corps) unsuccessfully attempted to invade Turkey. This was the beginning of the _____________ Campaign

Answer: Gallipoli

Every year Australian's remember the ANZACs on ANZAC Day (25th April).
6. The Great Depression, set off by the Wall Street Stock Market Crash in New York, hit Australia hard. The Premier of NSW proclaimed a plan to fight the Depression: reduction of interest on all government debts to Australians; suspension of all loan payments to all overseas creditors; the expansion of public works programmes; and bank funding of government works through controlled credit expansion. Although many agreed that this was a good way to go, the rest of the government did not agree. What was the name of this Premier of New South Wales?

Answer: Jack Lang

Premier Lang was known as "the big fella" and was Premier of New South Wales from 1925-1927, and again from 1930-1932.
7. Australians were conscripted (drafted) during the Vietnam War.

Answer: True

Australians were also conscripted during the Second World War.
8. The Australian flag was designed in what year?

Answer: 1901

The Australian flag was designed via a newspaper competition, but the Southern Cross stars were made with more points in 1903. (thank you for that Bertho!)

There has been a lot of debate over the last few years in Australia, not only on whether or not the country should become a republic, but also whether or not the Australian flag should be changed.
9. In 1967, Prime Minister Harold Holt went missing and was never found. Where was he last seen?

Answer: Cheviot Beach, Portsea

"It was an unusual way to lose a world leader. Melbourne gave him a beautiful memorial, the Harold Holt Swimming Pool in Malvern. Kind of like building a pistol range in memory of John Kennedy." Quote from "The Head Book" by John Marsden.
10. In 1975, the Whitlam government (1972-1975) was removed from power. What was the title of the man who was responsible for this?

Answer: Governor General

The Governor General represents the Queen and has the right to veto or agree to legislation of Australian Parliament. Before 1975, nobody really believed the Governor General would ever use such powers. When asked to step down as Prime Minister, Whitlam said the infamous line, "God save the Queen, because nothing will save the Governor General."
