Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In early 1971 I was a schoolgirl with a boyfriend in the army. Why was communication difficult?

Answer: Strike by Post Office employees

The 1971 Post Office strike occurred just as the change over to Decimal Currency was taking place and affected the postal service and public telephone boxes. Many post boxes were sealed and telephone booths were out of order. (At the time the telephone network in Britain was part of the Post Office and owned by the government).
2. What is the name of the pink and white striped cat that I now own, based on a British television series first broadcast in 1974?

Answer: Bagpuss

Emily was a little girl who owned a shop. She would find broken things and put them in the shop window in the hope that their owners would see them and reclaim them. Bagpuss sat in the window, but he was Emily's and she loved him. As soon as Bagpuss and friends were alone they came alive and figured out what the broken pieces were and refurbished them.

There were only thirteen episodes made and broadcast in 1974, but they were repeated many times over more than twenty years and viewed by many children and their parents.
3. In 1978 my friend Patricia ended up in hospital with a broken ankle due to falling off the edge of the pavement because she was wearing what type of shoes?

Answer: Platform soles

When I went to visit Patricia after her operation to set the ankle bones, she was one of four girls on the ward with similar breaks all caused by their footwear. Platform shoes had thicker soles. The ones I chose to wear only had one inch (2.5 cm) soles, but soles up to four inches (10 cm) were very common.
4. In the late 1970s the height of sophistication for me was wearing a long frock to attend parties where they served dips. What was the major ingredient of guacamole?

Answer: Avocado

Way back then, avocados were considered exotic. At first I only knew of them because of the colour, not realising the source of the name. These parties were a chance to explore new tastes and then pop to the avocado bathroom to dispose of the experiments that did not suit you.

Cheese came into its own at the Fondue Parties. I well remember my mother being so proud of her avocado green fondue pot and and my father's horror at being denied his usual meat and two veg!
5. David Bowie, Marc Bolan of T. Rex and Gary Glitter were all popular singers in the 1970s and specialised in what strand of rock music?

Answer: Glam

Glam rock, sometimes called glitter rock, was a style of rock and pop that depended more upon the appearance of the performers than the actual music. It started in Britain during the 1970s with usually outrageous bright, tight and shining outfits, bouffant hair, platform boots and songs that could be sung along to.

For the non-Brits out there, Blackpool rock is usually a slightly minty, hard white stick with a lurid pink covering shaped similarly to a relay baton. The name Blackpool runs inside the length of the stick. Blackpool is a very famous resort on the west coast of England to the north of Liverpool. Other colours, flavours and names are available too.
6. Early in 1970 my friend Jane was sent home from school because her mini-skirt was shorter than the standard twelve inch ruler. What was she wearing the next day that started the newest fashion trend?

Answer: Maxi-skirt

All of the teachers at the school I attended started to carry the standard foot long (30 cm) rulers around with them, which they would hold next to a girl's skirt. Those that ran out of skirt before ruler would be sent home.

Jane was one of the shortest girls in the form and when her mother bought a new standard school skirt, it reached Jane's ankles. She wore it to school unaltered and the trend was started.

Back then girls were not allowed to wear trousers and that included culottes as that was my particular fashion sin.
7. Which very popular and long running British series about the police ended its run in 1976?

Answer: Dixon of Dock Green

Jack Warner (1895-1981) played George Dixon, who introduced and ended each episode for the entire run of 432 episodes. It ran from 1955 to 1976 when Jack Warner was 80. When George was shot in one weekly episode, the BBC got 4,000 inquiries from anxious viewers and a special announcement was made to reassure them.
8. Although there were several soap operas in the 1970s, which one with notoriously wobbly sets was broadcast by Granada from 1972?

Answer: Crossroads

"Crossroads" was broadcast on various Independent (as opposed to the BBC) television channels from the mid sixties onwards. It was produced by Granada from 1972.

The everyday stories of the staff and guests of the Crossroads (a motel) was very popular, but was it mainly because of the wobbly set watchers?
9. I could only stand and watch as the local children appeared with their newest form of transport in 1972, as my father insisted that they were dangerous. What were they?

Answer: Chopper bicycle Mark 2

First came the Chopper and then the following year it was the Mark 2. It looked so different to the standard bicycles and I never got to ride on one! My father refused to let me go on the roads on an ordinary bicycle so it was something I only got to do on private roads during my summer holidays.
10. Now for the all important Avocado bathroom suite! According to property experts in 2016, houses with them are great investments.

Answer: True

Replacing out-dated interiors, according to Quanta Group the property developers, is the cheapest way to increase your property value. So goodbye to the Avocado suite, wood-chip walls and Aertex ceiling and replace them with more up to date fittings and decorations. These simple steps will increase the value of the property by much more than the cost of doing the work.
