Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Union general exclaimed, "My God. We must get out of this!" when he realized that his Second Corps troops were under attack on multiple fronts?

Answer: Edwin Sumner

The 65-year-old Sumner was the oldest general in the Army of the Potomac. He boldly led two divisions into the part of the battlefield known as the West Woods, where they faced attacks from nearly all sides.
2. Which Union regiment was said to have fought their way across the Lower Stone Bridge after being promised a ration of whiskey?

Answer: 51st Pennsylvania

The 51st Pennsylvania regiment was led by Colonel John Hartranft. Along with the 51st New York, they finally succeeded in crossing the Lower Stone Bridge. They did get the whiskey as well.
3. Which of the following generals did not die as a result of wounds suffered at the Battle of Antietam?

Answer: Confederate General Alfred Colquitt

Colquitt went unscathed in the battle. Mansfield and Starke died during the battle, and Richardson died six weeks after the battle as a result of the wounds he suffered at Antietam.
4. Which future leader of the Army of the Potomac was wounded at Antietam?

Answer: Joseph Hooker

"Fighting Joe" Hooker was wounded in the foot near the Miller cornfield. Burnside succeeded McClellan as Army of the Potomac commander, Hooker succeeded Burnside, and Meade succeeded Hooker. McDowell had commanded the Army before McClellan.
5. What was the actual name of the stone bridge usually known as Burnside Bridge or the Lower Bridge?

Answer: Rohrbach Bridge

The bridge was named for the Rohrbach family, whose farm was nearby.
6. Where was General George McClellan's headquarters?

Answer: Pry house

The Phillip Pry house was located roughly behind the center of the Union line. McClellan viewed what action he could see through a telescope from the Pry property.
7. The Dunker church belonged to which congregation?

Answer: German Baptist Brethren

The German Baptist Brethren were known as "dunkers" because they practiced baptism by total immersion. Their church building was a simple structure without a steeple, which they might have considered to be vain.
8. True or False? Barton Mitchell, the Union corporal who found Robert E. Lee's Special Order 191, was killed during the Battle of Antietam.

Answer: False

Mitchell was a member of the 27th Indiana regiment, part of the Union 12th Corps. He was, however, wounded in the fighting at the Miller cornfield.
9. The Confederate troops who confronted Burnside's men at the Lower Bridge were led by which former Georgia politician?

Answer: Robert Toombs

Toombs was a fiery politician and general who had little respect for most West Point graduates. Jones suffered a stroke and died early in 1863. Early and Wofford were involved in the Antietam fighting, but not at the Lower Bridge.
10. Which one of the following led the Union's famed Irish Brigade at Antietam?

Answer: Thomas Meagher

Meagher recruited most of the brigade from New York. He had been an Irish revolutionary who escaped imprisonment by the British. Caldwell's troops advanced to the Sunken Road after the Irish Brigade had fallen back. McNeil led the 13th Pennsylvania Reserve regiment and was killed in the battle. Seymour commanded five Pennsylvania regiments in the East Woods.
