1. How many Medals of Honor were awarded at Antietam?

Answer: 20

Eight of the 20 were given for either capturing enemy flags or keeping their own colors from being lost.
2. How many women were awarded the Medal of Honor in the 1860's?

Answer: One

Mary Edwards Walker received the Medal of Honor in 1866. She was the first woman to serve with the Army Medical Corp. She was captured and spent four months in a Confederate prison. She was awarded her medal in 1866 but in 1916 an elected board of reviewers took it away from her. In 1977 President Jimmy Carter restored the Medal of Honor to her.
3. Who was the first commander of the "CSS Virginia"? (The South's first ironclad ship)

Answer: Franklin Buchanan

He was also the first superintendent of the US Naval Acadamy.
4. Who introduced Ulysses S. Grant to his wife?

Answer: James Longstreet

Confederate General Longstreet was a cousin of Julia Dent, the future wife of General Grant.
5. What was the first Indian tribe to declare support for the Confederacy?

Answer: The Choctaws

In February of 1865 they declared such support in hopes of getting a better deal with the South than they were getting from the US Government.
6. Who was the first man to die for the Union, as is reported?

Answer: Elmer E. Ellsworth

On May 24th, 1861, he took it upon himself, to take down a Confederate flag flying over the Marshall House Inn in Alexandria, Virginia, and was shot in the chest by the Inn's owner. Mr. Ellsworth was a colonel in the New York Fire Zouaves.
7. Who was the first Confederate soldier killed in battle?

Answer: Private Henry L. Wyatt

Private Wyatt was an enlisted man in Company A, 1st North Carolina. He was mortally wounded on June 10th, 1861 at Big Bethel and died later that night.
8. What man's home was bombed during First Bull Run, prompting him to move to Appomattox Court House, where his parlor was used for the surrender of Robert E. Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia?

Answer: Wilmer McLean

On Sunday April 9th, 1865 General Lee signed the surrender papers. General Lee was dressed in his finest while General Grant looked like he had just come off the battlefield.

Answer: N. B. Forrest

Born in Tenn. his father moved the family to Mississippi early on. Forrest grew up to be very sucessful and wealthy. Forrest enlisted as a private and rose through the ranks to become one of the South's greatest fighters. After the war NB Forrest was one of the original founders of the KKK.
