Gaulish soldiers, often included in auxiliary legions, were respected soldiers in the Roman armies.
2. What was the name of Marseilles during Roman times?

The name was given by the Greeks who founded the city around 600 B.C. I've also seen it alternately spelled Massalia.

That disasterous invasion was partially sparked by Russia's refusal to recognize France's blockade of England. Napoleon felt his Continental System had to be maintained throughout Europe, and Czar Alexander, knowing it would ruin Russia, refused.
