During that time, the Hindu Javanese Kingdom of Majapahit established trade routes with China. Chinese merchants and traders went there in droves. An imperial edict at that time forbade women to leave China. As a result the Chinese men took local wives. The children of such mixed intermarriges were known as Peranakans.

Answer: Indian and Eurasian Peranakans

When the Indians and later the Portuguese arrived and intermarried, their descendents were known as Indian and Eurasian Peranakans respectively. The Indian Peranakans now refer to themselves as Chitty Melaka and the Eurasian Peranakans simply as Eurasian. The rest refer to Peranakans in general from the region they come from.

In the 15th century, Malacca was an important trading port in the region and served as a stopping point for China-India trade particularly during the two monsoon seasons.

These couples established the first permanent Chinese settlement in Malacca as well as the first Peranakan community in Malaysia.

Zheng He led seven naval expeditions to the Indian Ocean. His voyages, records and maps suggested that he may have gone as far as the Americas. However, this cannot be confirmed. Cao Cao was a Chinese warlord. Qu Yuan and Li Bai were poets.

Although firmly settled in their new community, the Peranakans and their descendents still held close ties with China. Sons were sent there for studies. This changed when the Dutch and Portuguese arrived in Malacca. With the schools they set up, the Peranakens sent their sons there to learn to read and write English.
