Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The 225th anniversary of U.S. independence was celebrated on July 4th. Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence and John Adams its foremost advocate both died on July 4th in 1826. What other former president also died on July 4th in 1831?

Answer: James Monroe

Monroe, our fifth president was one of the last of the revolutionary generation. John Hancock was the first to sign the Declaration of Independence. Washington was our first president and Madison was our fourth.
2. The first self-contained artificial heart was implanted into a 50 year old man at Jewish Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky. What is the heart called?

Answer: AbioCor

AbioCor is manufactured by Abiomed, Inc. of Danvers, Massachusetts. It is completely self-contained within the body and weighs about three pounds. Power is supplied by a battery pack worn externally on the belt. The battery sends power through the skin to an implanted coil. On any given day, your heart beats 100,000 times and your blood travels about 12,000 miles as it circulates through your body.
3. Because so many members of President Bush's cabinet were high-level officers or C.E.O.'s of large, private companies prior to becoming government employees, what has the media dubbed the Bush presidency?

Answer: C.E.O. Presidency

V.P. Dick Cheney was with Halliburton. Treasury Secretary Paul H. O'Neill was with Alcoa. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld was with G.D. Searle and Co. Secretary of The Army Thomas E. White was with Enron (a Texas energy company), and Bush himself holds an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.
4. More than 100 years ago Mark Twain challenged the readers of a literary magazine, edited by William Dean Howells, to a writing contest. Twain wrote a story, then asked other well-known authors to compose their own versions from the same outline. What magazine ran the challenge?

Answer: The Atlantic Monthly

No one took up the challenge until now. More than 700 people recently submitted their own versions as part of a contest run by the Buffalo (NY) and Erie County Public Library. The top three entries will be announced in October. Entrants were given the first part of the tale and were invited to finish it. Twain's tale, 'A Murder, A Mystery, And A Marriage' will be published in the July-August issue of The Atlantic Monthly.
5. A cargo plane carrying the fuselage and other salvageable parts of a navy spy plane arrived at Dobbins Air Reserve Base in Georgia more than three months after the plane collided with a Chinese fighter jet. Where in China did the plane touch down for an emergency landing?

Answer: Hainan Island

Hong Kong and Macao were colonies of Britain and Portugal which reverted back to Chinese rule in 1999. Beijing is the capital of China. The EP-3E navy plane was loaded with sophisticated electronics and surveillance equipment. The collision, and China's 11-day detention of the U.S. crew caused tension between Beijing and Washington, D.C.
6. Former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic made his first appearance before the United Nations War Crimes Tribunal in The Hague. How did he plead?

Answer: He refused to enter a plea.

Milosevic refused to enter a plea and tried to use the hearing to denounce NATO. Presiding judge Richard May of Britain cut off his microphone and entered a plea of not guilty for him.
7. Liverpool, England airport was renamed after one of The Beatles when a new terminal opened in the spring of 2002. What former Beatle was honored?

Answer: John Lennon

The new logo includes a Lennon self-portrait and the printed line 'above us only sky' from 'Imagine.'
8. Vice President Cheney had a dual-purpose pacemaker implanted in his chest. It sends a mild electrical charge when it detects the heart beating too slowly and an electric jolt to the lower chamber if the heart beats too fast. The jolt has been described as ranging from mild as a giant hiccup to:

Answer: a mule kick in the chest

The electric jolt contracts all of the chest muscles, not just the heart.
9. What is the $95 million spacecraft called that was launched to study light that was created within moments of the big bang?

Answer: MAP

CMB (cosmic microwave background radiation) is the radiant heat left from the big bang. The radiation contains a wealth of information about physical conditions in the early universe. In 1992 NASA's COBE (cosmic background explorer) satellite detected tiny temperature fluctuations called 'anisotropy' in the cosmic microwave background.

The MAP (microwave anisotropy probe) will map these fluctuations with a much higher resolution, sensitivity and accuracy than COBE.
10. According figures from the Census Bureau, how many American children lived in poverty in 1998?

Answer: one in six

Down from one in five in 1993 when childhood poverty was at its highest in a decade. Nationally, welfare rolls dropped by nearly 50 percent between 1993 and 1998, but child poverty rates dropped just 17 percent. The official poverty line was just $17,000 for a family of four.
