Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first Angevin king of England?

Answer: Henry II

Henry II brought the three lions symbol to England. His mother Matilda used her power and influence to help him become king. She had previously disputed her brother Stephen's claim to the throne, causing civil war. Stephen and Matilda were cousins.
2. Which two battles took place in 1066?

Answer: Hastings and Stamford Bridge

Stamford Bridge was a matter of days before Hastings. Harold Godwinson had beaten the Viking king Harald Hardrada. This situation where there were three potential successors arose because the previous king, Edward the Confessor left no heir. In those times there were no rules of succession to cover such an occurrence.
3. When was the Battle of Bannockburn?

Answer: 1314

The English were defeated by the Scots. This is usually attributed, in part, to the incompetence of Edward II. It is also attributable to the comparatively strong leadership of Robert the Bruce. The Scots were ultimately on to a loser, as Edward's successor Edward III proved to be a much better leader.
4. When was Charles I executed?

Answer: January 30th 1649

It was a cold day. Charles wore two shirts because if he shivered it might look as though he were afraid. Oliver Cromwell became Britain's leader following the death of Charles.
5. When was the Battle of Waterloo?

Answer: 1815

It was Napoleon's final defeat and, of course, it is also a song by ABBA. The Duke of Wellington was responsible for defeating Napoleon. The wars between Britain and Revolutionary (later Napoleonic) France (1793-1815) established Britain's global supremacy which lasted until the First World War.
6. Where did Simon de Montfort die?

Answer: Evesham

He was killed in battle by the forces of Edward I. To this day his name is associated with the city of Leicester, and one of the universities in Leceister (the former Leicester Polytechnic) was renamed De Montford University in the early 1990s.
7. Who was the last person that Henry VIII had executed?

Answer: The Earl of Surrey

Henry VIII died in 1547. Three of his children became monarchs, Edward VI, Mary, Elizabeth I. Henry executed hundreds of people including two of his wives.
8. Upon the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, in September 2022 Prince Charles became King __________ .

Answer: Charles III

His grandfather was George VI. Prince William will become William V should he live to become king.
9. Who was the first Tudor monarch?

Answer: Henry VII

He achieved this by defeating Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485. Richard had been from the house of York. It was at this time that the Tudor rose which is a combination of the red and white roses of York and Lancaster became a symbol of England as a token of reconciliation between the two factions.
10. Which of the following of Henry II's sons became king after his death?

Answer: John and Richard

Neither was really a brilliant king. Richard I spent most of his time out of the country, and John was forced to sign the Magna Carta by his barons. Geoffrey was a son of Henry who died before his father.
