Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Josef Jakobs, a German spy, was the last person to be executed in the Tower of London. He was shot by firing squad while sitting on a chair. Why was he not standing up?

Answer: He had broken his ankle when he parachuted into England.

Jakobs was executed by an eight-man firing squad in August 1941, eight months after parachuting into England. Nearly all German spies were captured, due in large part to the intelligence gathering activities at Bletchley Park and, rather than face execution, many were employed to send misinformation back to an unsuspecting German intelligence.
2. Louis XVIII was the last King of France.

Answer: False

Louis was an unpopular king, the first of the French monarchy that was restored following the defeat of Napoleon. The last French king was Louis-Philippe, who abdicated in favour of his son, Ferdinand, in 1848. Prince Ferdinand did not ascend to the throne due to the February Revolution that heralded the short-lived Second Republic.
3. Who was the last Pope to be married?

Answer: Adrian II (867-872)

Adrian II was already married when he ascended the papal throne. He refused to give up his wife. Although celibacy for priests was preferred, it did not become compulsory until 1139.
4. When Albert Woolson died in 1956, he was the last surviving authenticated veteran of which war?

Answer: The American Civil War

Woolson had been a bugler/drummer boy with the Union Army. When he died at the age of 109, there were still three centegenarians claiming to be veterans of the Civil War (John Salling, William Lundy and Walter Williams), but their claims could not be authenticated due to lack of records and contradictions in the 1860 census.

Their unofficial status did not prevent them receiving a special honorary medal from the US Congress, however.
5. Frank Weatherman was the last prisoner to leave which infamous penal institution?

Answer: Alcatraz

Alcatraz was closed down in 1963. When Weatherman left on March 21st, his parting words were, "Alcatraz never did no good for nobody".
6. How old was Anne Frank when she wrote the last entry in her famous diary?

Answer: 15

Anne's last entry was on August 1st, 1944. Three days later, the secret annexe in which the Jewish Frank family had been hiding from the Nazis was raided by the police. Anne died in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp a few months later.
7. George II of was the last British monarch to lead his troops into battle in person. Which battle was it?

Answer: Dettingen

The Battle of Dettingen was in 1743. It was a victory for the British (and their allies from a number of German states) over the French, during the War of the Austrian Succession. Handel composed a special "Te Deum" (the Dettingen "Te Deum") to celebrate the event.
8. The last of which of these species in California was sighted in 1924?

Answer: Grizzly Bear

Considering that the grizzly bear is the emblem that adorns the Californian state flag, its demise in this part of the USA is especially ironic.
9. What nationality was the last soldier killed in combat in World War One?

Answer: American

Private Henry Gunther of the 313th Infantry Regiment, 79th Division, was killed at 11.01am on November 11th, 1918, just as a messenger was giving word to his unit commander of the war's end. He had been attacking a German machine gun position when he was killed. He was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.
10. By the time the last Ford 'Model T' automobile was built in 1927, at what rate had 'Model T' cars been rolling off the production line?

Answer: One every 24 seconds

In production since 1908, the 'Model T' was the automobile that heralded a revolution in manufacturing production methods. Henry Ford did not invent the assembly line, but he did improve and perfect it.
