Answer: David Jacobs

The show featured four well known personalities of the day judging new recordings. They were asked to vote hit or miss. It was shown on Saturday at tea time and was a feature of most teenagers' lives.
2. Which musical which opened with the song 'Age of Aquarius' featured nudity?

Answer: Hair

This 1967 hippie musical caused a great deal of controversy not only regarding the nudity at the end of the first act, but also by its attitude to drugs and sex and disrespect of the American flag. It was the first musical to be defined as a rock opera.

It reflected the views and values of the hippy culture of the time and several of its songs were used in the anti Vietnam war protests.
3. Where did man walk for the first time in July 1969?

Answer: On the moon

In July 1969 American mission Apollo 11 landed on the moon at Mare Tranquilitatis. Neil Armstrong was the first to come out of the spacecraft followed by Buzz Aldrin about half an hour later. They spent about two and a quarter hours together on the surface of the moon, and brought back 47.5 pounds of lunar material for scientific investigation.

Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered this marvellous speech in 1963 at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. during the march on Washington for jobs and freedom. Over 250,000 people were present to hear him speak. Very sadly he was shot on 4th April 1968 at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis Tennessee.
5. Which of these was NOT a dance popular in 1960s?

Answer: Charleston

The Charleston was popular in 1920s. It was named after a town in South Carolina. It was originated by James P. Johnson in his show 'Running Wild'. The Twist was a worldwide dance craze inspired by rock and roll, and made popular by Chubby Checker when he danced the Twist to a tune of the same name on the Dick Clark Show.

The Mashed Potato was a dance popular in 1962. It was inspired by James Brown's song the 'Mashed Potato Song' in 1959 and it was also danced to Dee Dee Sharpe's 'Mashed Potato Time'. 'The Locomotion' song was also written for Dee Dee Sharpe by Carole King and Gerry Goffin.

The lyrics describe the dance which is usually performed as a line dance.

Answer: The Beatles

The Beatles were a band from Liverpool England which consisted of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. They formed in 1960 and played at the Cavern Club near Liverpool docks. The main song writers were John Lennon and Paul McCartney, but they all composed.

The Beatles had twenty No.1. hits in the U.K. and seventeen in the U.S. They are the best selling band in history, selling over eight hundred million records worldwide.
7. What were the British encouraged to go to work on by sixties advertising?

Answer: An egg

The traditional British breakfast of bacon and eggs was disappearing as people opted for more convenient choices like cereal or toast. The Egg Marketing Board fought back with this catchy slogan which was written by Fay Weldon who is now a very successful and well respected author.

The sexism of the sixties often showed in these adverts when it was stated that wives should make sure their husbands go to work with a nourishing egg inside them.
8. Which of these games was first available in the 1960s?

Answer: Operation

Operation was invented in 1964 by John Spinello who was a student at the time. He sold the rights to it to Milton Bradley for $500 and the promise of a job. It was later sold to Hasbro. The game is a picture of a man with various parts of the body shown as small cavities inside which are plastic items to represent various ailments.

The object of the game is to remove the ailments with tweezers without touching the side of the cavity. If the side of the cavity is touched the patient's nose lights up.

The game is very good for hand/eye coordination.
9. What was a Snickers bar called in the U.K. in the 1960s?

Answer: Marathon

Snickers is a chocolate bar made by the American company Mars Incorporated which was originally called the Mar-O-Bar company, which may be the origin of the name Marathon. It was called a Marathon Bar in the U.K. until 1990 but was always snickers in the U.S.A. Frank Mars took an existing sweet snack made of nougat, caramel and nuts and added the chocolate, and named it after his favourite horse Snickers.

It soon rose to be the biggest selling candy bar.

Dwight D. Eisenhower was president from 1953-1961.
John F. Kennedy was president from 1961-1963 when he was assassinated.
Lyndon B. Johnson was president from 1963-1969. He was formerly vice president and took over as president after the death of Kennedy.
Richard M. Nixon was president from 1969-1974.
