Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many SU-100Y SPGs saw service?

Answer: 1

In December 1939 a vehicle was developed based on the T-100. It was intended to have a 152mm and would have been used as an assault tank. Later on it was proposed to arm it with a 130mm naval gun. In January 8, 1940 the plans were finalized.

The only service it saw was during the defense of Moscow (1941-2).
2. The only operation the Light Tank (Airborne) M22 Locust was used in was ______?

Answer: Operation Varsity

Operation Varsity was a successful airborne operation that took during the last months of WW2. It was the largest airborne operation to be carried out in one day, in a single location.

Operation Diver was the defense of London against V-1 attack.
Operation Olive was an allied offensive against the Gothic Line.
Operation Chicago was an allied airdrop.
3. There was only one KV-1 that was captured from the Soviets by the Germans and modified into the KV-1B 765(r). What were the modifications done to improve the KV-1s performance?

Answer: 75mm KwK 40, new mantlet, new cupola, new radio

Only one KV-1 saw this change into the KV-1B 765(r), and it gave the KV-1 a much better firepower advantage from the older 76.2mm cannon. This KV-1 was attached to the 204th Panzer Regiment, a part of the 22nd Panzer Division, and saw action in the Battle of Kursk in 1943. Today, its fate is unknown, but it is presumed to have been destroyed in the heavy fighting.
4. What was the BA-30?

Answer: Half-tracked armored car

It was a Soviet prototype half-track. Early testing revealed its many shortcomings and the project was abandoned.
5. The SU-122 was an SPG developed from the T-34 tank with a 122mm howitzer. What was the major difference between it and the SU-122P?

Answer: A high velocity gun

The SU-122P was a prototype vehicle with a 122mm D-25S high velocity cannon. It was canceled due to low ammo capacity and a cramped interior.
6. Why was the T-44-122 project cancelled?

Answer: Cramped interior, low ammo count, slow rate of fire

The T-44 was intended to to replace the T-34. It was initially mounted with a 85mm gun but that was deemed to be unsatisfactory. Plans were made to mount a 122mm cannon but it was not successful. Later on the tank was equipped with a 100mm cannon, leading the way to the development of the T-54/55.
7. On what tankette was the T-27 tankette based?

Answer: Carden Loyd tankette

The T-27 was a Soviet tankette. It entered service in 1931. Most T-27s were destroyed during the early days of World War 2.
8. Which nation developed the AC IV Thunderbolt tank?

Answer: Australia

After producing its first tank the AC I "Sentinel" there were multiple modifications done to increase its performance. The AC IV was the last development of the Sentinel tank during the war and it was equipped with a 17 pounder gun, one Vickers machine gun and the Mark III engine.
9. What was the official designation for the German light tank Luchs (Lynx)?

Answer: Panzer II Ausf. L

It was the last development of the Panzer II light tank. It was re-purposed as a light reconnaissance tank.

Fun fact: the Panzer II Flamm (Flamingo) was a variant of the Panzer II tank with two small turrets mounted at the front of the tank, both equipped with flamethrowers.
10. What unusual design feature did the Light Tank Mk VII Tetrarch have?

Answer: The front wheels could turn

It was a British-produced light tank by the Vickers-Armstrong company in the late 1930s. Due to British tank doctrine most Tetrarch tanks remained in Britain, with a couple of dozen being sent to the USSR as part of the Lend Lease program. It was replaced by the M22 Locust in 1944.
