Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This tank was a rather good one and is quite often called the best World War II era non-German tank. Do you remember what it was called?

Answer: T-34

The T-34 was a Soviet tank produced from 1940 to 1958 and was introduced to combat the latest German tanks. Production ended with a grand total of 84,070 (all models and variants included). The T-34's massive success is often credited to the sloping front armour, which stopped quite a few German tanks' shells.
2. This German tank was designed to specifically counter the T-34 and is considered to have fulfilled this requirement.

Answer: Panzer V 'Panther'

The Panzer V 'Panther' wasn't as numerous as the other 'Panzer' series tanks were but was nonetheless a formidable opponent to face. With sloped armour (like the T-34 had) and a massive 75mm main gun, the Panther was excellent when used as the main armoured fighting force in the attempt by Hitler's forces to break out of the Soviet stalemate.
3. This Germany Tank Destroyer was based on the chassis used by Porsche to build the tank design that lost to the Tiger I in a competition to build an MBT for use on the Eastern Front.

Answer: Elefant

Only 90 Elefants (or Ferdinands [aAfter Ferdinand Porsche] were built, due to the fact that the German industry's capacity to build was being destroyed by bombing and the fact that numerous faults were found with the Elefant. Sporting a forward facing 88mm KwK 43/2 L/71 gun and armour 7.9 inches thick, the Elefant wasn't a tank to mess around with.
4. British World War II Tanks were quite often useless and as a result, Britain relied on American armour for the duration of WWII. This Tank, however, was an exception. Designed to combat the German Tiger/Tiger II tanks, it would have done well had the war not ended before they were deployed in significant numbers.

Answer: A34 Comet I

To give it its proper name, the Tank, Cruiser, Comet I (A34), the Comet I was an exceptional WWII tank. Comparable to the Tiger/Tiger II tanks, the Comet had a 77mm HV main gun and a maximum of 4 inches of armour. The
Comet was manufactured by Leyland Motors Ltd, who built a total of 1,186.
5. Italy didn't have much in the way of tanks during WWII, relying on imports from Germany. The few that they did produce, however, made excellent tanks. This tank weighed 26 tons, had a crew of 4, and some models even sported a mounting for an anti-aircraft gun!

Answer: Fiat P26/40

The Fiat P26/40 was a heavy tank designed in 1940. 103 were built, both before and after the Italian surrender. Armed with a 75mm main gun and an 8mm Breda machine gun, this tank was one of the best produced before the Soviet Army started advancing on Berlin.
6. Designed and built in France, this tank had a reputation for reliability. Unfortunately, this didn't help much when Hitler decided to invade France.

Answer: Char 2C/ FCM 2C

The Char 2C was a WWI design that eventually became the largest (proportion- wise) operational tank ever built. Armed with a 75mm main gun and with mountings for four 8mm machine guns, the Char 2C was a formidable sight in battle. With only 10 ever built, though, even this tank couldn't stop the excellent German Panzers of WWII.
7. This tank is one of the few that the Japanese ever built. First introduced into service in 1944, it was designed to combat the M4 Sherman (USA). In this role it failed, as the Sherman was rarely used in the Pacific Theatre. 166 were produced between 1944-1945. It was the last tank to be fielded by the Imperial Japanese Armed Forces.

Answer: Type 3 Chi-Nu

The Type 3 Chi-Nu wasn't introduced into service until 1944 because of the emphasis the Japanese High Command DIDN'T place on tanks. When this policy was removed, it was too late. The Type 3 Chi-Nu sported only a type 3 75mm main gun and had only 12-50mm of armour.
8. Most war historians agree that this U.S. tank was the second best Allied tank of WWII. With the official rating of a medium tank, it had a excellent reputation for ruggedness and durability, and was used in all theatres of war by all sides (Enemy Forces would often repair and reuse captured enemy equipment).

Answer: Medium Tank, M4, (Sherman)

The Sherman was a brilliant tank. When it was first introduced in 1942, the Sherman had a 75mm M3 L/40 main gun, one .50 Calibre Browning M2HB machine gun, and two .30-06 Browning M1919A4 machine guns. This tank has been produced, someplace or another, since 1941, with a total of 49,234 produced (estimated).
9. This particular Russian tank had an incredible 5 turrets. Suffering from major technical problems and an inferior power-to-weight ratio, this tank was one that couldn't do much.

Answer: T-35

The T-35 was produced between 1933-1938 by KhPZ. The T-35 was slow and mechanically unreliable, but was good enough to have 61 built. It had a 76.2 mm main gun-model 27/32 an a secondary armament of 2 45 mm guns and 5/6 7.62 mm machine guns. With a top range of 150 km at a speed of 30Km/h, this tank was almost functionally useless to armoured forces.
10. This tank was first produced in 1944, Hitler himself named it. Used primarily as a tank destroyer, it had massive front and side mantlet. It was often painted in the distinctive 'Zimmerit' anti-magnetic desert paint camoflage.

Answer: Jagdpanther

The Jagdpanther (German: 'Hunting Panther') was a massive 45.5 ton tank with 3.14 inch thick frontal armour and 3.93 inch mantlet armour. Sporting a 88mm Pak 43/3 or 43/4 L/71 main gun and a 7.92mm Maschinengewehr 34 machine gun, this was one of the toughest tanks ever to destroy.

There are even stories going around that one Jagdpanther, sitting in the middle of a street in France after the D-Day invasion, destroyed 25 US made M4 Sherman tanks before being knocked out of action.
