Answer: Philip Kearny

The battle of Chantilly was fought on September 1, 1862 in a rain storm. Gen. Kearny rode into CSA lines and when called to surrender, he fled but was killed by rifle fire. His horse and equipment were sent to his widow by Gen. Lee.

Answer: 5

First district Va., Second district North/South Ca., Third district Ga. Ala. Fl., Fourth district Miss. Ak., Fifth district Tx., La.. 200,000 soldiers were stationed in the south to preserve order and carry out the orders of the Federal Government.

Answer: Stainless Banner

The flag was red with a blue St. Andrews Cross with 13 stars. It was adopted so it would not be confused with the Union Army's Flag on the battlefield. This Flag was draped over Gen. Jackson's coffin while he lay in state before his burial.

Answer: Canister

The Canister round was a thin-walled cylinder packed with musket balls, large iron balls, nails, or scrap metals. It was effective at about 600 yards or less and acted like a giant shotgun.

The Enfield got its name from the British government's Royal Small Arms Factory in Enfield, England. In the spirit of maintaining neutrality, as the owner of the factory the British government could not sell the rifles to either the North or the South. The rifles were made in England by private contractors in London and Birmingham.

Both the Spencer and Henry repeating rifles were breech-loading and fired new metallic cartridges with built-in rimfire primers. The bullets were loaded into a tubular magazine that fed the breech, where the lever-action mechanism seated the bullet into the firing chamber.

In late August 1861, Gen. Fremont placed all of Missouri under martial law. When he issued his own he declared that Missouri's slaves shall be free forever. When Pres. Lincoln found out he asked Fremont to modify his proclamation to conform to offical policy. When Fremont refused Pres. Lincoln relieved him of command, and revoked his proclamation.

Answer: Gordon

In a predawn raid Gen. John B. Gordon led the troops on an assualt on the fort. It was captured quickly and the CSA troops turned the captured cannon and fired on adjacent forts. They were answered back with heavy fire from Union cannon, and infantry reinforcements. Gen. Lee called the attack off at 8:00AM. He lost 4,000 men. No gain was made .
10. What was the date that the draft was enacted in the North?

Answer: March 3, 1863

An act for enrolling and calling out the National Forces was signed into law March 3, 1863. It called for all men between the ages of 18 and 45 to be enrolled into local militia units and be available to be called into national service. Men in some occupations were exempt from enrolling.
