The Allied forces is a well known name for the Triple Entente, entente being French for 'agreement'.

Answer: 1914 and Rupert Brooke

Rupert Brooke wrote the most famous poem in the history of the First World War, which was 'The Soldier'. He wrote it a few days before Christmas Day, 1914.

Chlorine gas was first used by the Germans on 22 April 1915 at Ypres. It was developed by Fritz Haber (1868-1934) who was, somewhat controversially, awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1918. The prize was awarded for his work on fertilizers, not chlorine gas.

It is often said that without these fertilizers Germany would almost certainly have run out of food in 1915. In 1933 the Nazis forced Haber to leave Germany on account of his Jewish origins.
