Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From which country does Gouda cheese originate?

Answer: The Netherlands (Holland)

Gouda is a hard yellow cheese made from cow's milk. The name, unsurprisingly, comes from the city of Gouda, which is located in the West of the Netherlands in the province of South Holland.
2. So you think you know your pasta. If you do you will be aware that this is the name of an Italian dish made with large tubes of pasta filled with a savoury meat filling.

Answer: Cannelloni

Ravioli are pasta squares, Lasagne are pasta sheets and Cannoli is a Sicilian pastry dessert. A variation on the meat Cannelloni is to use a spinach or tuna stuffing.
3. To the horror and disbelief of many Scottish people, some folks actually like to mix whisky with other liquids to produce a different drink, but what is added to make a Whisky Mac?

Answer: Ginger Wine

The Whisky Mac cocktail is attributed to a Colonel Macdonald, who devised it during his time in India. The full name of a Whisky Macdonald is often shortened to the more commonly known "Whisky Mac". If preferred the whisky can be substituted with brandy to form a Brandy Mac.
4. There are many types of tea supped throughout the world; one of the best known is named after a British Prime Minister of the 1830's. Who might this be?

Answer: Earl Grey

Named after the 2nd Earl Grey, Viscount Howick, this particular type of tea has a very distinctive flavour and aroma. This is obtained by the addition of oil extracted from the rind of the Bergamot orange, an intensely fragrant citrus fruit.
5. I guess some people will not like this question or the meat that is used to make it but it's one of my favourites so I'm going to ask it anyway. Which type of meat is used to produce a Wiener Schnitzel?

Answer: Veal

Few foods are more evocative of Austrian cuisine than the humble Wiener Schnitzel, or Viennese Cutlet. Traditionally an escalope of veal is coated in breadcrumbs and fried lightly. In today's PC climate, veal is replaced by pork. I call it sacrilege.
6. OK. We all know that wines are made from grapes and that many wines are called by the name of the grape from which they are made. However the French like to be different and tend to name wine after the region it comes from; the English, just to upset the French call one particular wine something different. What name is given to red wines that come from the Bordeaux region of France?

Answer: Clarets

Bordeaux has over 115,000 hectares (285,000 acres) of vineyards. With an annual production of approximately 850 million bottles, Bordeaux produces large quantities of everyday wine as well as some of the most expensive wines in the world. Both red and white wines are produced in the Bordeaux region although only the red variety are called "Clarets".
7. To make a great dish one really needs a superb sauce to go with it. One such sauce is "Pesto"; do you know which herb is primarily used in the making of a Pesto sauce?

Answer: Basil

This is a sauce originating in Genoa which is part of the Liguria region of northern Italy. As well as basil other ingredients would include crushed garlic, parsley, grated cheese, pine nuts and olive oil.
8. Right, so we like a little bitterness in our mineral water. Don't worry, the problem has already been solved with the invention of Tonic Water. What would you add to your mineral water to create Tonic Water?

Answer: Quinine

Tonic Water derives its name name from the medicinal effects of the bitter flavouring. Quinine was added to mineral water as a prophylactic against malaria. The British whilst in India decided it was too bitter and started to drink it mixed with Gin.
9. Do you know your Balti from your Biryani? If so, you will know that the name of the clarified butter used in Indian cuisine is called?

Answer: Ghee

Ghee, is also known as clarified butter in the Western world. It is made by simmering unsalted butter until all the water content has evaporated. The cooked and clarified butter can then be removed. Unlike ordinary butter, Ghee can be stored without refrigeration; most useful in tropical countries.
10. I remember that my Grandma used to have a glass of Sherry before dinner and I asked what it was. My Dad told me that it was a fortified wine, so my question is: what is added to the wine after fermentation to fortify it?

Answer: Brandy

A true Sherry will come from the area surrounding Cádiz, in Spain. Since the fortification process takes place after fermentation is complete, most Sherries are initially dry. In contrast, port wine is fortified halfway through it's fermentation thereby stopping the process, resulting in a much sweeter drink.
