Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Foosball
Answer: Games played with a small ball
Foosball, also called baby-foot, is generally played by two to four players. Each side controls four lines of stick-men that can rotate at will as well as move horizontally, up to a certain limit. A small ball is placed in the middle of the table, which is usually designed to emulate a soccer field.
The objective is to manipulate the ball using these players to score the ball in the opponent goal, while simultaneously defending your goal from being scored on.
2. Table Tennis
Answer: Games played with a small ball
As the name suggests, the game is meant to emulate the great sport of tennis on a much smaller field of play. The game can be played by two opponents (as singles) or four total players (as doubles). Each player has a racket and takes turns striking a small, hollow ball over a net.
The objective is to bounce the ball on the opponent's side of the table. If it bounces more than once or cannot be returned, the point is declared for the winner and a new point is played until the game is over.
3. Miniature golf
Answer: Games played with a small ball
18-hole golf is notoriously expensive and tedious to play. Some games may take up to 5 hours to complete. Miniature golf focuses on "putting" or tapping the ball with a club when it is relatively close to the hole. This exercise effectively reduces the space required while still respecting the rigorous skill needed to get the ball in the hole, or at least the putting portion of the game :)
4. Beer Pong
Answer: Games played with a small ball
This game is often played at college parties. A certain number of plastic cups are filled with beer and placed across a large table, with two teams facing each other. The objective is to throw a small ball into one of the plastic cups. Someone from the conceding team must drink the beer from the cup that was scored in.
A team wins when they manage to score the ball in all their opponents' cups. The real winning is the fun had along the way :)
5. Hangman
Answer: Games played with a pen and paper
The game can be played by as little as two and as many as one thousand people (theoretically). One person thinks of a word or phrase and draws a noose after revealing the number of letters in the word or phrase (usually by drawing small lines to indicate the number of letters in each word). Participants then take turns guessing letters to fill in the phrase.
When a letter is not present, it is written down next to the noose, and a hangman starts to get drawn. The objective of the game is to guess the word or phrase before the picture of the hangman is completed.
6. Pictionary
Answer: Games played with a pen and paper
The board game is played by teams where each team receives a word or phrase that they must draw. Other members of the team have a limited amount of time to guess the word or phrase based on the drawing provided. Various rules exist that determine winners.
7. Tic-tac-toe
Answer: Games played with a pen and paper
The children's game is played on a 3x3 grid with nine possible squares to be filled. Each player takes a turn drawing either an "X" or an "O" in one of the grids. The first to match three characters in either a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line is the winner. The game has been solved and perfect play results in a draw.
8. Scattergories
Answer: Games played with a pen and paper
This exciting game can be very mentally taxing, and requires quick thinking skills and some luck. A side is rolled, and a letter is chosen. All participants must fill out a list of categories with elements beginning with the letter rolled. Some categories are quite simple - it's easy to think of a country starting with the letter A, and others can be quite complicated - under pressure, it may be difficult to think of a pizza topping starting with the letter I.
9. Poker
Answer: Games played with playing cards
Poker is one of the most famous gambling games with many variants - the vast majority of variants use a standard 52-card deck. Most games have standard key rules - 5 cards are used to make a card, each person must respect the turn order before betting, and all money is aggregated in the middle of the table as "the pot" until a winner is awarded the funds.
10. Contract Bridge
Answer: Games played with playing cards
Contract bridge is a "trick-taking" game where all 52 cards are distributed to two teams of two players each, who face each other at opposite sides of a table. The objective of the game is to collect "tricks". A trick is collected by the team that has the highest rank of the leading suit. Variants of bridge are played all over the world, with many unique rulesets.
11. Solitaire
Answer: Games played with playing cards
As the name suggests, this game is usually played individually. The game functions as a puzzle that the player must attempt to solve - the more of the puzzle that he or she solves, the more cards are revealed. The game has become famous for its "Windows" version, that has wasted many productive hours at the office :)
12. Blackjack
Answer: Games played with playing cards
Blackjack is a casino game that is played against the house. Both the player and the dealer receive two cards each, with each rank being assigned a numerical value equivalent. The objective of the game is to get as close to 21 as possible without going over. The popularity of the game has led to several casino variants with different rule sets.
13. Craps
Answer: Games played with dice
The casino game is particularly popular in North America, although it evolved from the French dice game "hazard". There is no stated direct objective of the game, but participants play against the casino and attempt to guess the outcome of the two dice being thrown.
It is a highly social game, with an entire table of players usually betting on similar outcomes, and one shooter (who is also betting) throwing the dice across the table hoping to help everyone beat the house (which is always impossible in the long run).
14. Monopoly
Answer: Games played with dice
Monopoly is one of the most popular board games on Earth; the objective of the game is to be the only one with any money or property left, bankrupting other players. Dice rolls determine movement during the gameplay, perhaps illustrating the impact that luck can have on wealth accumulation in real life, which was the original developer's goal behind creating the game. Buying properties and developing them with the hopes of collecting exorbitant rent from other players is the goal of the game. Many games can end up stalemated and take hours to complete, if not abandoned altogether.
15. Settlers of Catan
Answer: Games played with dice
The board game is an excellent mix of strategy, luck, and cooperation. In standard variants, four players compete to develop and expand their initial settlements while cooperating if another player is too far ahead - progress is exponential in "Catan", and strong starts must be punished severely by the other three players to ensure they have even a small chance at success. Only one winner can be crowned after receiving 10 "Victory Points" through various means.
16. Risk
Answer: Games played with dice
Risk, almost marketed as "Risk: Global Domination" is a strategy and cooperation board game that can be played by 2-6 players. The Earth is divided into territories, with each player receiving armies that they can assign to corresponding territories. In classic variants of the game, the objective is to dominate the world by capturing all the territories and effectively eliminating all other players from the game.
The classic variant can take a particularly long time, especially if stalemate occurs and troop counts are very high for many players, creating a military standoff.
As a result, many Risk board games come with alternative game play modes to shorten game time and increase the fun.
