6. Which of these card games is a "shedding" game, where the aim is to get rid of all of your cards? Hint

Question 7 of 10

Question 9 of 10
9. This game uses a board with 104 cards on it. Players are dealt a number of cards and can place one of their chips on a tile that matches a card in their hand. The aim is to get five chips that form a... well, the title of the game. What's this game's name? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. Finally, this game has a board, two stacks of cards and a pair of dice. It comes in many different editions and the only squares on the board that are always the same (in English language versions) are the four corners. What game is this? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This game has more dice than any other game I've played: each player gets five dice, and the game can be played with two to six players. Which game, a type of "Liar's Dice", am I talking about?

Answer: Perudo

"Perudo" is the name I used to call it, although it also goes by "Dudo" (Spanish for "I doubt"), "Cacho" or "Dadinho".

In the game, people each have their own concealed set of dice and make bids, guessing how many dice of a certain type there are in total (e.g. "four threes" means "there are at least four dice showing the number three"). The round continues with bids increasing until someone calls the previous player by shouting "Perudo".

If the player who calls is right, the one who bid incorrectly loses a die; if the bidder was right, the person who called incorrectly loses a die. Play continues until only one player has any dice left.
2. This interesting variation with dice adds an element of luck to a game which is otherwise solely skill-based. In the most common version, the numbers one to six each correspond to a type of piece (e.g. castle), and players rolls two dice before each turn to determine which pieces they are allowed to move. Which game is this?

Answer: Dice Chess

1 - Pawn
2 - Knight
3 - Bishop
4 - Rook / Castle
5 - Queen
6 - King
Doubles - any move

If white rolled, for instance, 1 and 4, he/she would have the option of moving a pawn or a rook that turn. The aim of the game is to capture the king, so games don't always end after checkmate but can often be won with just check.

In my experience, the heavily limited choices mean players are much more aggressive than usual, making risky moves that would be very stupid in normal chess (such as a queen capturing a rook which is protected by another piece).
3. This game features dice, but they have letters instead of numbers on their faces. Words are made using adjacent letters in the 4x4 grid. Which game is this?

Answer: Boggle

Sixteen dice are shaken on a covered tray and fall into a 4x4 grid. The player makes paths across the grid, with each letter crossed making a word. The aim is to get the longest word.

In the original version, "Qu" was included on one tile because if a "Q" appears without a "U", it is very difficult to use it; the "Qu" tile is worth two points instead of one. The highest score is 17 points, only possible through one of the following three words: inconsequentially, quadricentennials, and sesquicentennials.
4. On to cards: the aim is to create four foundations of cards from a tableau with seven piles of cards, and a stock. Which of these games is this?

Answer: Klondike

The game is one of the many variants of "Solitaire" or "Patience", both of which describe the game fairly well.

The aim of Klondike is to create four stacks ("foundations") of cards, one for each suit, with the cards in ascending order. The "tableau" consists of seven rows of cards; the bottom card on each stack can be moved up to the foundation if all the lower cards in the suit are already there. The remaining cards ("stock") can be dealt three at a time and moved to either the tableau or straight to the foundation.
5. In this card game, the number of cards decreases each round. Players have to win at least one trick to stay in the game. When I play this game, I use the variations that allow players to go to "dog" and "blind dog". What game is this?

Answer: Knockout Whist

In the first round, each player has seven cards and there is a randomly decided trump suit. The first player puts down a card, and the other players have to put down a card of the same suit, with the player of the highest card winning the trick. If a player doesn't have a card belonging to the suit played, they can choose any card from their hand to put down; if a trump is placed down, that card is ranked higher than any card of a different suit.

If a player fails to get a single trick in a round, they are eliminated or (in some kinder variants) get a "dog's chance": they are dealt one card in the next round and can choose which trick to use it in. If the person fails to win a trick again, they can be given a "blind dog's chance", where they are given one face-down card and have to play it without knowing what card it is.
6. Which of these card games is a "shedding" game, where the aim is to get rid of all of your cards?

Answer: Uno

Uno, meaning "one" in Italian or Spanish, is a game in the Crazy Eights family. Various versions have cards which allow players to change hands, reverse the direction of play or force the next person to pick up between two and eight cards. One version (Uno Attack/Uno Extreme) even has a card launcher which dispenses a random number of cards when the button is pressed.
7. This board game requires 100 tiles; two are completely blank. There are 225 squares on the board; some have things like "2xWS" written on them. What game is this?

Answer: Scrabble

"2xWS" stands for "two times word score": it doubles the value of the entire word.

In the English version, there are 98 tiles with a letter on and 2 blank cards that can be used for any letter. The letters are each assigned various scores, based on rarity of the letter (a blank tile scores zero) and when words are made on the board, the number of points scored is the sum of the values of each letter. Double and triple letter and word cells on the board can increase the value of tiles, and a 50 point bonus is awarded to a player who uses all 7 tiles in their hand in a single turn.
8. This board game is designed for four players; each player gets 21 tiles that take up between 1 and 5 squares. The aim is to place as many tiles as possible on the board, before everyone runs out of room. What is this game called?

Answer: Blokus

The 21 tiles are every possible permutation of 1 to 5 square tiles: there is 1 tile that takes up one square, 1 that takes up two squares, 2 three squares, 5 four squares and 12 five squares. Tiles have to touch a tile of the same colour diagonally, but are not allowed to touch vertically or horizontally.

There are 400 squares on the board, and each player's tiles take up a combined total of 89: it is possible to fit all 84 tiles on the board, but players try to block each other to prevent others from being able to lay down any more tiles.
9. This game uses a board with 104 cards on it. Players are dealt a number of cards and can place one of their chips on a tile that matches a card in their hand. The aim is to get five chips that form a... well, the title of the game. What's this game's name?

Answer: Sequence

The number of cards dealt varies between 3 and 7, based on the number of players. Each card appears twice on the board, so there are two packs of cards used by players. The aim is to get five chips in a row, column or diagonal line. There are no jokers, but jacks have special properties: a two-eyed jack lets the player put a tile on any (free) tile they choose, while a one-eyed jack is used to remove an opponent's counter from the board.
10. Finally, this game has a board, two stacks of cards and a pair of dice. It comes in many different editions and the only squares on the board that are always the same (in English language versions) are the four corners. What game is this?

Answer: Monopoly

The four corners contain the phrases "Go", "Jail", "Go to jail" and "Free parking". Everything else is different: even in normal editions, names of properties and stations/railroads vary between the UK and US. The "chance" and "community chest" names are also different in other editions: for instance in One Direction Monopoly (yes, that's a real thing), they are named "#OneDirection" and "This Is Us".

Monopoly is an iconic board game and many phrases such as "get out of jail free card" have become idioms in common usage. The game was created in the 1930s, based on an earlier 1903 game, intended for educational usage and to show the disadvantages of monopolies (a word describing a situation where a single person or group controls something almost exclusively).
