Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There are ten astrological "planets" that represent bits of one's personality.

Answer: True

The Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto are some of the most important influences/powers in your horoscope.
2. The three "great circles" used by astrologers to calculate the positions of the planets relative to Earth are:

Answer: The horizon, equator, and ecliptic.

The ecliptic is the Sun's apparent path in the sky around Earth. The highest points of the ecliptic (furthest from the equator) are denoted as the solstices. The ecliptic is at an angle to the Earth's equator because of the Earth's 23.5 degree tilt at the axis.
3. When a planet seems to hesitate, stop, and begin to move backwards relative to the Earth's orbit around the Sun, this planet is said to be in:

Answer: Retrograde motion.

Because of the other planets' varying orbits around the Sun, some planets may seem to move backward. The energies of these planets are said to change in the horoscope when retrograde motion is achieved.
4. A conjunction in the natal horoscope means that one or more planets are/have:

Answer: All of these answers.

Depending on the different signs and the characteristics of the planets involved, this feature in a horoscope is very important during interpretation.
5. There are this many houses in a natal chart which denote different spheres of life.

Answer: Twelve

What house a planet is located in may add extra energy and have an effect a certain part of your subject's life.
6. One common method used by modern astrologers to calculate the houses in a natal horoscope is:

Answer: Placidus

Some other credible calculation systems are Equal House, Koch, Morinus, Campanus, and Regiomontanus. The system used depends on an astrologer's preferences. Through interpretation of many horoscopes, one method may strike an astrologer as more accurate and become their preferred method.
7. When calculating a person's natal horoscope, these three pieces of data are crucial to the accuracy of the reading:

Answer: Their date of birth, exact time of birth, and location of birth.

A chart can be cast with just a person's date of birth and where they were born, but the ascendant and house placements will most probably be inaccurate. An exact time of birth and whether it was A.M. or P.M. is crucial to an exacting natal horoscope.
8. When calculating a person's birth chart, it is very important to take Daylight Savings Time into account.

Answer: True

I think many an amature astrologer has made the mistake of calculating a birth chart without taking Daylight Savings into affect. This would result in the Ascendant either being one house behind or one house ahead of the real Ascendant.
9. After you have dealt with all the Daylight Savings Time, you must convert a person's birth time from their time to this:

Answer: Greenwich Mean Time.

Greenwich is basically where the time zones begin.
10. When calculating a person's natal horoscope, the Ascendant and Midheaven (Medium Coeli) are found by converting the Greenwich Mean Time into:

Answer: Sidereal time.

However, this is only the ST for Greenwich so you have more steps to commence with. You must then add the birth time to the ST to make it applicable to where the individual was born.
11. A person with their sun in Leo can have their Mercury in Libra.

Answer: False

Because of the way Mercury moves through the Zodiac, it is usually in the same sign as the sun but can also be in the next natural progressive sign.
12. The energies of planets are affected by the signs they are in. There are four ways a sign may affect a planet. They are referred to as follows:

Answer: Ruled by, exalted in, in detriment, and fall.

When a sign is ruled by the planet, it is in its native realm. When it is exalted, the sign makes the planet's powers even more powerful. If a planet is placed in detriment by the sign it's in, then the powers are eroded quite a bit. This is not its natural tendency. And of course in fall a planet's powers just aren't what they usually are. They tend to be weaker.
13. As an example, when a person's Mercury is in Scorpio and their Pluto is in Gemini, this is called:

Answer: Mutual Reception.

Mutual reception happens when Planet A is in a sign ruled by Planet B, and Planet B is in the sign ruled by Planet A. It is said to create harmony between the two planets. If there is an aspect between these two planets, then that aspect will be stronger (unless it is a "negative" aspect, then it will resolve the tension between the two planets).
14. The Grand Trine is an aspect pattern that involves three planets which are connected by this degree of separation to each other:

Answer: 120 degrees.

The Grand Trine can be beneficial, depending on the signs and planets involved.
15. The Stellium is when a group of this many or more planets are in one house.

Answer: Three

The Stellium focuses a lot of power into one little area. This will cause the bearer to take on the characteristics of the house's sign moreso than usual.
16. To predict how an individual will act and feel at a certain age in the future, an astrologer may choose to do this to the natal chart:

Answer: Progress it.

The most popular way to progress a chart is the "day-for-a-year" system. This is in no way to predict a certain event of the future, it is simply to give us a guideline about a person's life and where they may be led.
17. For additional accuracy during interpretation of a chart, this method adds some new aspects to a chart. The method includes tenents from Eastern astrology as well as some numerology and was elaborated upon by the British astrologer John Addey.

Answer: Harmonics

Harmonics takes into account the numerological significance of planets in a chart and their aspects. It is complicated but may yield very satisfying results.
18. There are seven chart types which relate to the way the planets are distributed in a natal chart. This system of grouping was devised by American astrologer Marc Edmund Jones. They are:

Answer: The Splash, Bundle, Locomotive, Bowl, Bucket, See-Saw, and Splay.

When planets are grouped in a certain way around the chart, this may denote a general tendency in the owner's personality.
19. A person with their Jupiter in Virgo will usually have tight reins on their indulgence in food, money, or any other pleasurable pursuit. It may also allow the person to be more serious about their pursuit of knowledge.

Answer: True

Jupiter, being a planet of generosity, pleasure-seeking tendencies, and expansion of everything (even your waistline), is somewhat limited in Virgo. Since Virgo is an Earth sign and is so much more serious about things, this might cause some decrease in the intensity of the planet's powers.
20. When one is interested to find out how two people will get along, they compare the two charts. This practice is called:

Answer: Synastry.

You must compare the aspects each person's planets make to the other person's planets. Also, you must take in account what signs and houses the other person's planets are in.
