1. The bolani is a type of flatbread eaten in Afghanistan. Which of these would you not find as a filling?

Answer: Pork

This flatbread generally consists of only vegetables as filling though sometimes lentils are also used. Meat is not something you would expect in a bolani and given that Afghanistan is a Muslim country, there is no possibility of finding pork as a part of the cuisine.

The bolani is usually served along with yogurt and is a popular accompaniment to a meal of kebabs.
2. Chinese cuisine includes a flattened, round bread called bing. The chun bing variety is specifically prepared to mark the beginning of which season?

Answer: Spring

Also known as the spring pancake, chun bing is eaten in the northern parts of the country on the day of lichun which marks the beginning of the spring season. The pancakes are wrapped around fresh vegetables and meat and the custom of then eating this food is called 'Bite the Spring' which invokes a good harvest.
3. Popular in Singapore and Malaysia, what is the kaya that gives kaya toast its name?

Answer: Coconut jam

Kaya is a thick, creamy spread made using coconut milk, eggs and sugar. It is commonly referred to as coconut jam. Kaya toast is popular as a breakfast item in both Singapore and Malaysia.
4. The curry bread is a popular food item in India.

Answer: False

Curry bread is in fact unheard of in India. However, it is popular in Japan. Japanese curry is filled in dough, covered with a coat of bread crumbs and then deep fried. Baked versions of this have also made an appearance to appeal to the health conscious. The most common forms of having curry in Japan are along with rice, noodles or in the form of curry bread.
5. In which small island nation would you come across a rice pancake called appam?

Answer: Sri Lanka

Appams are bowl shaped pancakes made from rice flour and coconut milk. They are eaten with accompaniments like chutney and sambar (a lentil stew) and can also be had along with fish or chicken curry. Appams are also popular in the southern part of India. They are sometimes also referred to as hoppers.
6. Which of these is a hard bread traditionally cooked by the nomadic Balochis of Pakistan?

Answer: Kaak

Kaak is commonly referred to as patthar ki roti which translates to bread of stone. While preparing kaak, the dough is flattened and then rolled over a preheated stone. The stone covered with the dough is then baked in a clay oven called the tandoor.

Saag, murgi and tamatar are the Hindi words for spinach, chicken and tomato respectively.
7. Which of the following gives the flatbread sheermal its unique flavour?

Answer: Saffron

The sheermal is believed to have originated in Iran and then made its way to the regions now covered by Pakistan, Bangladesh and Lucknow in India. This slightly sweetened bread is made using milk instead of water and then flavoured with saffron.
8. The pineapple bun which is popular in Hong Kong has been traditionally made with pineapple.

Answer: False

Despite its name, the traditional version of the bun doesn't contain pineapple in any form. It was so named because the top part of the bun resembles a pineapple. Some varieties are made with a piece of butter stuffed inside the bun. In 2014, the pineapple bun was declared to be part of the intangible heritage of Hong Kong by the government.
9. Which of these is a type of hard unleavened bread commonly eaten in the desert areas of Rajasthan in India?

Answer: Baati

Baati requires minimal water for its preparation and can also be stored for a long time. This makes it ideal for the desert climate of Rajasthan.
