Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We'll start with my home-country New Zealand where one of our local dishes is 'Pork and Puha'. Puha is the Maori name for locally grown what?

Answer: Watercress

Puha grows in low lying areas and by creeks and rivers. The dish 'Pork and puha' is very tender and sweet and lovely with boiled potatoes fresh out of the garden.
2. In the northernmost part of Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, you can buy glorious chunks of a Tyrol-style salted smoked pork. What is the local name for this?

Answer: Speck

Speck is often served for breakfast. However it also makes a tasty snack.
Knödel are bread dumplings to accompany stews, roasts, and boiled
meats; Krapfen are filled doughnuts; and Sauerkraut is pickled cabbage. All of these are available in this region where the cooking has a heavy Austrian influence.
3. We're drinking a spirit distilled from the Blue Agave plant. I've also blended mashed-up avocado, onion, garlic, tomato, chilli, and lime juice to make a dip I'll serve with corn chips. We're having what sort of a party?

Answer: Mexican

Yes, Tequila and guacamole! Mexico has produced many good things but few to rival these two in my opinion.
4. Which vacation album are you most likely to be reminiscing over if you order a Planter's Punch?

Answer: The Caribbean Cruise

Mmmm, Planter's Punch. I made friends with this rum and grenadine based cocktail in Antigua. Delicious and refreshing but also dangerous I found out - especially in the heat!
5. The primary ingredient in dhal is...?

Answer: legumes

Legumes such as chickpeas, split lentils, mung beans, dried peas, and beans are used collectively and variously to make delicious Indian vegetarian soups and stews . The collective ingredients and the finished dishes are known as dhal.
6. What is braai?

Answer: A barbecue

Braai is a term used in the very southern states of Africa to describe a barbecue or grill or the act of barbecuing or grilling. Originally an Afrikaner term, it is now widely used in this area. Traditionally, braai is done over charcoal or wood creating an open flame as opposed to the gas barbecues used in many western countries.
7. Which of these distilled spirits is the odd one out?

Answer: Bruichladdich

If you're into Irish whiskeys then Jameson's, Red Breast, and Powers will surely be familiar to you. Bruichladdich, of course, is a Hebridean Scotch.
8. Larb (or 'laap') is the signature dish of which country?

Answer: Laos

Larb is a type of meat salad which comes from Laos (and formerly northeast Thailand0. Laos considers larb its national dish. It can be made with chicken, fish, beef, pork, turkey, or duck which is either cooked or raw and flavoured with lime juice, fish sauce, and fresh herbs. The minced meat is mixed with chilli, mint and sometimes vegetables and tossed through with roughly ground toasted rice. It is accompanied with sticky rice and raw vegetables.

.
9. In a Greek kitchen, Graviera and Manouri are food-group cousins to - ?

Answer: feta

Graviera and Manouri, like Feta are cheeses used in Greek cooking. Ouzo is of course the famous Greek aniseed flavoured aperitif; persillade is a mixed seasoning of herbs, garlic, oil, and vinegar used in French and Mediterranean cuisine; and pita is a type of bread which, like the others, is also served everywhere in Greece.
10. And finally to the sweetest part! It's Thanksgiving and you're going all-out traditional. Given the festival, that means you're probably going to serve what for dessert?

Answer: Pumpkin Pie

Yum yum, All-American spicey Pumpkin Pie. The others are nice too, but Pavlova is an Australasian specialty (my favourite, but then being a New Zealander I'm biased!) while plum pudding is an English dessert usually served at Christmas. And Black Pudding, also English, isn't actually a pudding at all but rather a savoury dish made of suet, oatmeal, onions, and blood - best fried for breakfast if you like that sort of thing!
