Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Chateau Lafite-Rothschild is located in what village?

Answer: Pauillac

Many people would consider Ch. Lafite-Rothschild to be the world's finest wine.
2. If you visited Burgundy, which of these wines might you encounter there?

Answer: Chambertin

Chambertin is one of the finest red burgundies.
3. If someone offers you a glass of Barsac, what should you expect?

Answer: A sweet white wine

Barsac is sweet dessert wine, similar to Sauternes.
4. In the 19th century, the best red wines of the Medoc region of Bordeaux were classified into five categories or growths, from "first growths" (the best) to "fifth growths." These are known as "grand crus." What year did this classification take take place?

Answer: 1855

There are 60 classified "grand crus" in the Medoc. By the way, other regions also use the term. You should be aware that a "grand cru" in St. Emilion does not indicate the same level of quality as a "grand cru" in the Medoc.
5. One wine was so outstanding that it was included in the above classification, even though it is not produced in the Medoc. Which one was it?

Answer: Ch. Haut-Brion

Ch, Haut-Brion is a red Graves. It is, in my humble opinion, the finest wine in the world.
6. Only one wine has been "promoted" since classification began, being raised from a "second growth" to a "first growth" in 1973. Name it.

Answer: Chateau Mouton-Rothschild

In 1973, Ch. Mouton-Rothschild joined Ch. Lafite-Rothschild, Ch. Latour, Ch. Margaux and Ch. Haut-Brion as the best of the best.
7. Which of the following is NOT a classified "grand cru" wine of the Medoc?

Answer: Ch. Gloria

Ch. Gloria did not exist when the classification was made. Ch. St. Pierre is a fourth growth, the other two are fifth growths.
8. Which of these wines IS a classified "grand cru" of the Medoc?

Answer: Ch. Haut-Bages-Liberal

Ch. Haut-Bages-Liberal is a fifth growth of Pauillac. Ch. Haut-Bages-Averous is the "second wine" of Ch. Lynch-Bages; Ch. Haut-Bailly is from graves; and Ch. Haut-Maillet is a Pomerol.
9. At 425 acres, this is the largest chateau in the Medoc.

Answer: Ch. Larose-Trintaudon

Despite its large size, Ch. Larose-Trintandon consistently produces very good wine.
10. What famous French chateau teamed with California winemaker Robert Mondavi to produce the famous wine Opus One?

Answer: Ch. Mouton-Rothschild

I have tasted Opus One on several occasions, and while it is indeed good wine, the price seems a bit much for what is essentially a reserve California cabernet.
11. What is the only village in the Medoc to boast of more than one "first growth?"

Answer: Pauillac

Ch. Lafite-Rothschild, Ch. Mouton-Rothschild and Ch. Latour are all Pauillacs. Ch. Margaux is, of course, a Margaux, and Ch. Haut-Brion is a Graves.
12. Pavillon Rouge is the "second wine" of what famous chateau?

Answer: Ch. Margaux

It also produces a white wine called Pavillon Blanc. Many chateaus have a second label they use for wines made from younger vines, or for wines that do not quite measure up to their standards. These are often outstanding wines in their own right, and can be good values.

By the way, the second wines of the other chateaus are Carruades de Lafite, Les Forts de Latour, and Ch. Bahans Haut-Brion.
13. Immigrants from what country had a great influence on Bordeaux's wine industry?

Answer: Ireland

In the 17th century, thousands of Irish fled to France to avoid English persecution. Many became involved in the wine trade. Their influence can still be seen in the names of the wines: Ch. Leoville-Barton, Ch. Kirwan, Ch. Lynch-Bages, and my favorite Ch. MacCarthy-Moula.
14. All of the following were great Bordeaux vintages EXCEPT:

Answer: 1965

1965 was a disaster. Only a few properties produced drinkable wine, notably Ch. Latour, which has a reputation for amking good wine even in off years.
15. All of the following were terrible vintages for Bordeaux wines, EXCEPT:

Answer: 1995

1995 is one of the best recent vintages, with the wines just now beginning to be ready for drinking.
16. What nearly destroyed the French wine industry in the 1870s?

Answer: Phylloxera

Phylloxera is a tiny mite that lives in the soils and destroys the roots of vines. It was accidently introduced into France from America in the 1860's. Fortunately, American vines are resistant to phylloxera, so nowadays French vines are grafted onto American rootstocks, and wine can still be made in France.
17. Sancerre is a delicious wine from what part of France?

Answer: The Loire Valley

18. If you visit the city of Toulon, you might try this famous local wine.

Answer: Bandol

Bandol is made from the Mouvedre grape. It has a unique flavor and is very good, but, alas, also quite expensive for such a little-known wine.
19. Tavel is best known for its:

Answer: rose

20. All of the following are famous villages in the Beaujolais region except:

Answer: Auxey-Duresses

Auxey-Duresses is a village in the Cote de Beaune region of Burgundy known mostly for white wines.
21. A friend gives you a bottle of Romanee-Conti. You should:

Answer: Save it for a special occasion

ROmanee-Conti is a tiny 4.3 acre vinyard that produces some of the world's best red burgundy. It is said that the late Vice President Spiro Agnew, when entertaining, would instruct his servants to pour him Romanee-Conti from a bottle wrapped in a towel to conceal its label, while he served his guests lesser wines. If you have ever tasted Romanee-Conti, you won't blame him.
22. Claret is a generic term for:

Answer: Red Bordeaux

23. Chateau Petrus is one the world's most expensive wines. Where is it made?

Answer: Pomerol

Ch. Petrus is so expensive that only the fabulously wealthy can drink it. Other wines of Pomerol are much more reasonable, and, in some cases, nearly as good.
24. Which city is the center of champagne production?

Answer: Reims

The Champagne region is in northern France.
25. Red wines should always be served at room temperature.

Answer: False

The best red wines should be served at around 65 degrees farenheit; lighter reds, like Beaujolais around 54 degrees. Most people keep their houses heat to above 70 degrees. The biggest mistake people make in serving wine is serving red wines too warm and white wines too cold.
