Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Government department is responsible for issuing fishing licences in England and Wales?

Answer: Environment Agency

A good amount of the money raised from the sale of licences goes to cleaning up the waterways, introducing youngsters to the sport and protecting and replenishing the fish stocks.
2. This fish is unique in that is classified as both a game and a coarse fish. How is the 'Lady of the Stream' better known?

Answer: Grayling

The grayling has the largest dorsal fin (in relation to the size of the fish itself) in the UK.
3. Which is the most common species of carp in British waters?

Answer: Mirror

Carp are not native to the UK. They were first introduced to Britain by Medieval monks as a source of food.
4. An increasingly popular and productive method of fly-fishing is known as 'nymphing'. But what is a nymph?

Answer: A water dwelling insect larva

Nymphs make up a large part of the diet of many fish. Trout, grayling, carp, even bottom dwelling tench have been fooled by artificial imitations.
5. Why would you use a PVA bag when fishing?

Answer: To present your groundbait

A PVA bag will dissolve in water, leaving your groundbait in a neat, appetising pile. What self-repecting carp could resist?
6. Sewin are highly sought after fish in Wales. How are Sewin better known in the rest of the UK?

Answer: Sea Trout

The Sewin or Sea Trout is actually a brown trout that has migrated to sea. When they come back to fresh water to spawn, they can give some great sport and regularly reach weights of 10 lb plus.
7. If you are lucky enough to catch a sturgeon in British waters, what should you do with it?

Answer: Give it to the Queen

Oddly enough, like swans, all sturgeon in British waters belong to the Queen. It is an offence under UK law to take a sturgeon and not offer it to Her Majesty.
8. This fish likes the bottom of lakes, can have bright red eyes, and is sometimes known as the 'Doctor Fish'. What is it?

Answer: Tench

The tench was known as the doctor fish because in Medieval times it was believed that its slime had medicinal qualities.
9. One fly-fishing method is known as 'Loch style'. What does this involve?

Answer: Fishing from a free-drifting boat

It has been said that if you give a man a fish, he will eat for a day; if you teach him to fish, he will get drunk on a boat. However, Loch style doesn't usually involve alcohol.
10. According to the Yellow Pages advert, who wrote the book, 'Fly Fishing'?

Answer: J R Hartley

Although the book didn't exist when the advert was made, you can now buy 'Fly Fishing by J R Hartley'.
