Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Played with black and white cards written in plain Helvetica font, what game is known for being unabashedly politically incorrect?

Answer: Cards Against Humanity

Launched in 2011 after a strong Kickstarter campaign, Cards Against Humanity grew to become a millennial favourite over the decade, building itself around the simple premise of receiving a question (or a FITB) where the goal is to pick the funniest card for the person leading the round. Most of the option cards are clearly offensive though some are relatively innocuous; all you need to do is play to the card reader's warped sense of humour.

The game creators are known for their game concept, releasing new expansions consistently to refresh the game, but also for their marketing. Over the years, the company has taken donations to buy a private island and dig a hole (a literal money pit).

They've also intentionally raised priced during Black Friday (only to sell MORE copies than usual as a result) and mail paying customers cow dung. People asked for it.
2. In what game do you build your own dungeon in order to stop local heroes from passing through and defeating you?

Answer: Boss Monster

Boss Monster is equal parts card game and dungeon builder. You start the game by drawing a monster card and you attempt to construct a dungeon of up to five rooms to complicate things for the heroes who plan on looting your rooms and causing you harm.

At the same time, you need to harm other players by affecting their dungeon in various ways. The winner ends up being the player who can accumulate the most kills without dying. A sequel, Boss Monster 2: The Next Level, released in 2015, expanding the original game.
3. Considered a Russian Roulette card game, which of these kickstarter-funded games contains 'Nope' cards?

Answer: Exploding Kittens

Although creators initially wanted $10,000 to create the game, the Kickstarter took in over $1,000,000 and became a quick success, resulting in a simple-in-concept last-man-standing card game where the goal is to avoid drawing an Exploding Kitten by cleverly utilizing the cards in your hand to alter the deck and harm other players. By using 'Attack', 'Defuse', 'Skip', 'See The Future', and 'Nope' cards (amongst others), you fight to avoid elimination at every turn.

The game also saw expansions with Imploding Kittens and Streaking Kittens as well as a NSFW edition that resulted from a high Kickstarter goal.
4. You and an opponent both get a character and an attribute in this card game, and only one can win the battle (as chosen by other players). What's the game?

Answer: Superfight

Another game in the vein of Cards Against Humanity, Superfight takes two types of cards (white character cards and black attribute cards) and forces you to think on your toes to create an argument as to why your selected hero or villain would win in a fight against your opponent.

The winner is selected by those not arguing their point. Numerous themed expansions have been added to the game, not unlike CAH, to keep things interesting, and several different elements (like scenarios) have also made appearances.
5. "Kill the monsters, steal the treasure, stab your buddy." What 2000 card game has seen spin-offs in Zombie, Superhero, and Cthulhu themes?

Answer: Munchkin

The goal in Munchkin is to level up to Level 10, and to do that you either need to draw Level Up! cards or kill monsters that you encounter by kicking open dungeon doors. While you can spend all of your time optimizing your own character, there's a lot to be said in this role-playing card game for sabotaging everyone around you with unfortunate curses, item effects, and devious rule-bending (sometimes with cards that allow you to cheat).

The countless spinoffs and expansions to the game allow for players of all types to have a chance to grievously harm their close friends and fellow players.
6. What Mattel card game contains Skip, Reverse, Draw, and Wild cards?

Answer: Uno

Made popular after its release in the 1980s, Uno is one of the rare non-standard-deck card games that's had lasting popularity due to its relatively simple rules and, oddly, its tendency to play like the standard deck game Crazy Eights. The goal is to empty your hand of all of its cards and, over several rounds, accumulate points. Like in Crazy Eights, dropping cards is done by either suit (or colour in Uno) or number, and some of those numbers have effects in the game's rotation.

Interestingly, there are numerous themed versions of the game, even though the rule usually remain the same.
7. You can be a Duke, a Contessa, an Assassin, an Ambassador, or a Captain in which secretive card game?

Answer: Coup

Coup is a fast-based card game in which you begin with two roles drawn at random from a deck. The goal is to knock your opponents out by killing them (ie. removing cards from their hand), getting them to make false calls in determining your identity, or getting caught out on their own lies. Each game naturally builds to an end since players can accumulate wealth to perform coups on their foes, but some players can also steal coins, assassinate others early, or change their identities throughout.
8. Which of these card games contains eight different types of cards (including the Handmaiden and the Baron)?

Answer: Love Letter

Interestingly, while this game only uses eight different cards, the game has a series of unique rules and each of the cards plays a different role in advancing the players, either forcing them to play, protecting them from harm, or removing them from the round entirely.

The goal is to end the round with the highest value card in hand, though most of the cards are low-ranking. Although only eight types of cards exist in the deck, there are sixteen total cards in the game, each ranging in strength from 1 (a Guard) to 8 (a Princess).
9. In which of these games is the discard pile known as 'The Ocean'?

Answer: You've Got Crabs!

In this game, you want to get crabs, and ending the game with the most crabs results in a win. To do that, you end up getting a partner and the two of you work out a code with which you can communicate. Everyone swaps cards with the discard pile in the center of the table and when you accumulate a full set of four, you make the signal to your teammate and they have to figure out that you've got crabs (and announce it).

Other players can also call you out, but if they're wrong, they lose crabs. Likewise, if you call out a player for using their signal, you can grab their crabs. Lots of crabs in this game.
10. What word association card game includes wild cards and varying symbols throughout the deck?

Answer: Anomia

To play this game, you shuffle a fairly tall stack of cards, all with different symbols and topics on them, and these are flipped until similar symbols are drawn by two different players. The goal, then, is to supply a response that fulfills the topics on both cards before the opposing player can so that you can accumulate points. So while the game is definitely one of reflex, it's also about general knowledge, and unlike many other card games, there's much more of a focus on word association and memory.
