Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. While driving down US Highway 6 in Nebraska, Hubbie stopped to top off the gas tank. Chubbie and Swimgirl bought snacks at the gas station including interesting items for the Pupsters. What were these porcine doggie treats called?

Answer: Smoked Pig Ears

Smoked pig ears are actually a tasty treat for Midwestern dogs in the USA. Sad to say, humans in Chubbie's area enjoy pickled trotters and pickled eggs. (Stop into a small town Nebraska tavern and enjoy strange and wonderful menu items.)

Fun fact: According to the Cambridge Dictionary, "to make a pig's ear of" means to do something very badly...as in the British citation "Tim made a right pig's ear of putting those shelves up." Hmmm...perhaps he needs a cold beverage and a pickled egg to feel better.
2. Chubbie wanted to expand her horizons. She and Hubbie ventured to Japan, where she fell in love with a wonderful confection named "dorayaki." What is the main ingredient of this sweet item?

Answer: Bean paste

Yes, indeed. Bean paste is the correct answer - albeit sweetened to taste. Yummy!

Doraemon (a Japanese TV character) loves dorayaki and calls it "yummy buns."

The word "Mikasa" originally means triple straw hat, but also is an alternative name of Mount Wakakusa, a low hill with gentle slope located in Nara.

**Terribly difficult question...I know.**
3. Americans enjoy potato chips. Who is credited with creating these tasty treats?

Answer: George Crum

According to a 1983 article in "Western Folklore", potato chips were said to have originated in Saratoga Springs, New York - George Crum said that a customer complained that his french fries were too thick, so he kept slicing them thinner, then fried them to a crisp. Thus, the addictive potato chips were born!
4. Chubbie's first job was as a car-hop at a drive-in restaurant in Greeley, CO. Thursdays were especially busy because it was "Rocky Mountain Oyster" night. What is NOT another name for this special menu item?

Answer: River Bivalves

Can everyone give me a big "YUM"! The foils are all names for deep fried bull testicles. I know it sounds gross, but they are surprisingly good! (River Bivalves are imaginary as far as I know.)
5. Hubbie finally took a vacation from his alien/zombie/scary axe-wielding co-workers (Yea!) On our trip to Andalusia, we encountered a tapa. What did we do?

Answer: Eat it. (It is a lovely Spanish snack)

We ate it! Tapas are Spanish small-dish offerings that are wonderful!

Wild mountain goats are cute, but aren't called tapas. Please leave them alone.

The word "topaz" is believed to have stemmed from the ancient Indian Sanskrit word "tapas" which means fire.
6. Hubbie and Chubbie live in Nebraska - just a few country miles from Wilber, which hosts one of the USA's most recognized ethnic festivals. Which wonderful European culture is celebrated here in late summer? (Hint - its main draw is the lovely kolaches that the local church ladies bake.)

Answer: Czech

The small town of Wilber, Nebraska, was named the Czech capital of the U.S. in 1987. An annual Czech celebration is usually held the last weekend in July or early August.

It is worth the 30 minute drive from Lincoln to enjoy the filled pastries and enjoy the Polka bands in the beer garden. (Trust me - it is fun!)
7. Hubbie had a hankering for a good old-fashioned Runza. (Who knew it was also called a bierock, fleischkuche, or Kraut Pirok?) What is this tasty item?

Answer: German Meat-filled Bread

A Runza is a yeast dough bread pocket with a filling consisting of beef, pork, cabbage, or sauerkraut, onions, and seasonings.

The recipe was spread throughout the United States by the Volga Germans (Germans from Russia) and can be found in Nebraska, North and South Dakota, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma. The term "runza" is registered as a trademark in the United States by Nebraska-based Runza Restaurants.
8. Swimgirl enjoys a spicy kimchi. Which is NOT true of this national dish of Korea?

Answer: It includes a small amount of diced sharkfin for flavor.

Kimchi is a traditional sweet & sour fermented Korean side dish made of vegetables. In traditional preparation, kimchi ferments underground in jars for months. Kimchi varieties are determined by the main vegetable ingredients and the mix of seasonings used to flavor the kimchi.

Sharkfins are not a typical ingredient.

The other foils are all correct statements.
9. Swimgirl and family went to the seaside for dinner. She is a picky eater so Chubbie referred to the calamari appetizer as onion rings. These lovely rings are actually made from what?

Answer: Squid

It took years of Swimgirl enjoying calamari as onion rings until she was enlightened! But then again, everything is great with ketchup, right?
10. Hubbie has a hankering for a nice cold soup. Which of the following would NOT satisfy his craving?

Answer: Cock-a-leekie

Cock-a-leekie is a lovely HOT soup from Scotland made from chicken stock, leeks and potatoes.

Binignit is a cold dessert soup from the Philippines made from coconut milk, fruit and tapioca.

Borscht is the national Ukrainian dish made from meat, beets and cabbage. It can be enjoyed both hot or cold.

Fruksoppa is a Swedish dessert soup typically made from dried fruits such as raisins and prunes.
