Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first pie on offer consists of pork and jelly. It is served cold and it is perfect with a pint of beer. Which town in Leicestershire, England, is traditionally the home of pork pie?

Answer: Melton Mowbray

The pork pie is made using hot water pastry. Melton Mowbray pork pies are protected under the European Union's "Protected designation of origin" since April 2008. This means that only pork pies made around the area can carry the name Melton Mowbray pork pie.

The other three choices are all in Leicestershire, Market Harborough is a market town, Newtown Linford is a linear village and Leicester, a city, is the county town of Leicestershire.
2. This pie is another favourite of mine. The pie consists of minced lamb and vegetables with a mashed potato topping instead of pastry. What is the name of this pie?

Answer: Shepherd's pie

This pie is also called country pie. Cowboy pie is made with sausages and baked beans, goatherd's pie is made using goat instead of lamb and someone somewhere sometime will bake a salesman pie.
3. The next pie on offer is a traditional British pie called homity. What king of pie is it?

Answer: Open vegetable pie

The base of homity pie is made with pastry and the filling normally contains potatoes, onions and leeks topped with cheese. The filling varies from place to place and includes other vegetables and apples. The other three options do exist but are not homity!
4. The next pie contains both a main meal and a sweet in the same package. What is the name of this extraordinary pie?

Answer: Bedfordshire clanger

The savoury end of the Bedfordshire clanger normally contains meat and vegetables, whereas the sweet end contains jam or sweetened fruit. This was a traditional meal for people occupied in agricultural tasks. Bangers are sausages and the Buckinghamshire clanger is a savoury pie.
5. Our next offering is a called Bridie pie and it is a meat pasty in a flaky pastry. From which part of the United Kingdom did this pie originate?

Answer: Scotland

The Bridie pie is also called Forfar pie from the town in Scotland that made the pie popular. The meat in the pie is normally lamb but beef is used as well. The Birdie looks like a Cornish Pastie but it does not contain potatoes.
6. The next one is a favourite in Lancashire, in North West England, and the filling is potatoes and onions. What is the name of this pie?

Answer: Butter pie

The butter pie was normally baked on Fridays because, under church rules, no meat was eaten on that day. Both spud pie and onion pie contain cream and cheese and as far as I can tell there is still no margarine pie.
7. The next pie comes from the Caribbean and specifically Trinidad and Tobago. What is the name of this soft and fried pastry?

Answer: Aloo pie

The filling of the Aloo pie consists of boiled potatoes, garlic, salt, pepper and other spices. The ingredients are wrapped in a soft pastry and then fried. The rest of the options are made up.
8. Bisteeya (ba-see-ya) is a main meal and sweet package in filo pastry. From which North African country does this pie originate?

Answer: Morocco

The pie is made using layers of cooked chicken and almond sugar wrapped in filo pastry and cooked in the oven. When the pie is ready it is sprinkled with powdered sugar and cinnamon. Neither Angola or Namibia are North African countries.
9. What is the main filling of the Russian pie Coulibiac?

Answer: Fish

Coulibiac is a fish pie made normally with salmon or sturgeon. The fish is combined with rice, mushrooms and hard-boiled eggs and baked in puff pastry.
10. Gibanica is a European favourite consisting of white cheese and eggs. From which region does it come?

Answer: Balkans

Gibanica, a cheese pie, originated in Serbia but it is a favourite throughout the Balkans. Gibanica can be either savoury or sweet and it is baked in filo pastry.
