Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Popular type of camping jacket

Answer: Anorak

The reason an anorak is a very popular type of camping jacket is that it does not have a zipper; it goes on over the head. Because of this, a camper does not have to worry about broken zippers, zippers coming undone, or losing vital body warmth when all they do is move. Many anoraks also have a hood attached that provides more warmth and protection from the elements. This type of jacket was invented by the Caribou Inuit to keep out the Arctic cold.
2. An article of clothing worn around the ankle to keep socks and shoes dry and warm

Answer: Gaiter

Gaiters can be worn to participate in a number of different activities. Hikers and campers wear them to keep their feet, shoes, socks and pant legs dry and warm. Horseback riders wear them to protect their feet from getting sore or stiff.
3. A bag worn on the shoulders that carries hiking supplies and food

Answer: Haversack

A haversack is a bag that campers and hikers use to carry supplies. Specifically, a haversack is a bag with one shoulder strap while a backpack has two shoulder straps. Haversacks are also used by men and women in the military to carry gear.
4. Protection for food items and cooking utensils

Answer: Bear Bag

A bear bag needs to be made of a waterproof material and hung high enough off the ground to keep a pesky, hungry bear from reaching it. It is important to remember to turn your bag upside down when you tie it shut before hanging. This helps to keep any rain out.

While there are bear bag products on the market that claim that they can be stored on the ground because they are bear proof, hanging the bag from a tree is still the best way to keep your food source safe.
5. Log bridge built over unstable terrain

Answer: Puncheon

Puncheons can be improvised or permanent structures, but in either case, their purpose is to provide a bridge over unstable, fragile or wet ground such as high moor or swampland. Permanent puncheons are often also referred to as plank roads, but campers will build puncheons of whatever boards, branches and planks they can find.
6. Large, often central, tent of a camp

Answer: Marquee

A marquee tent is a larger tent, often located centrally to a camp and used for communal functions such as being a mess hall. Marquees frequently do not have side walls, but just provide a canvas roof, giving free access and airflow from all sides. The term marquee is also used for open pole tents used outside a camping context to host summer events, particularly in English tradition.
7. Covered area connected to, but not part of, a tent

Answer: Vestibule

A vestibule is an additional, partially sheltered area in front of a tent entrance. Most often, it is created by attaching a canvas section to the tent proper above the actual entrance and then supporting it with two poles, providing some shelter from the elements.

More elaborate vestibules can have side walls as well. Regardless of the construction, you should not start a fire in your vestibule area - the canvas could catch fire and toxic carbon monoxide could accumulate under the roofing even if you have open sides.
8. Buried heavy item to which a tent can be anchored

Answer: Deadman

The term "deadman" refers to a buried heavy, natural object, often a rock or log, used as an anchor. It is not unique to camping, being used, for example, in climbing as well, with the same general connotation: in each case, the object provides an anchor point in ground that would normally not be fit for that purpose.
9. Inner wall of a two-walled tent

Answer: Canopy

In a two-walled tent construction, the inner wall is made of a breathable material that easily lets air pass, but would not stop the elements. It is then covered on the outside by the rain fly, a usually impermeable canvas, that is not extended all the way to the ground.

The advantage of this construction is that it provides good protection against rain while still maintaining a flow of fresh air without having to leave a completely unprotected gap near the ground.
10. Small cooking pot

Answer: Billy

A billy, also called a billypot, or billycan, is considered by some to be the most important camping equipment that a camper can own. Boiling water and making food are necessary for survival, and the billy will do both. The handle is on the top, which allows easy hanging over the campfire. Now that the camp is set up, it's time to boil the billy for a cuppa.
