Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the UK this board game is called "Snakes and Ladders". What is it called in the USA?

Answer: "Chutes and Ladders".

This classic children's board game is still popular today and is thought to be based on the ancient game of "Snakes and Ladders" dating back to 2nd century India.
2. What game, which is judged by some to be one of the most historically and culturally significant games ever published, am I describing? Its most basic form involves aiming small counters/discs into a container.

Answer: Tiddlywinks

Tiddlywinks (originally called "Tiddedy Winks"), despite generally being perceived as a children's game, enjoyed huge adult popularity in the 1890s. I would say that Tiddlywinks still does have plenty of serious adult players as witnessed by the many Tiddlywinks competitions and tournaments.
3. Which game claims to "tie you up in knots"?

Answer: "Twister"

"Twister" was designed by Reyn Guyer in 1966 and although it is good fun to play it is also the ultimate dexterity game. It became an instant hit when Johnny Carson and Eva Gabor played it on "The Tonight Show".
4. Which board game can be played by very young children as the skill of reading is not required?

Answer: "Candy Land"

"Candy Land" is often the first board game parents buy their children as long as colours can be recognised. First introduced in 1949, there have been many other games in the "Candy Land" family such as "Candy Land Bingo" (1978), "Candy Land VCR Board Game" (1986) and "Candy Land Castle" (2007)
5. Which popular board game has been turned into a short lived TV game show (ran 1997 -1998 and was hosted by Alan Thicke) and also a children's TV game show which aired in 1989?

Answer: "Pictionary"

"Pictionary" was designed by Rob Angel in 1985 and led to a craze during the 1990's. It has also been said that the TV game show "Win, Lose or Draw" (1987-1990) hosted by Bert Convy owes a lot to "Pictionary".
6. This game has been described as "the single defining trivia game in mainstream America in the 1980's" and has editions with such names as "Genus I", "The Lord of the Rings Movie Trilogy Edition" and "The Totally 80's Edition". Which game am I referring to?

Answer: "Trivial Pursuit"

Since its first appearance in 1982 "Trivial Pursuit" has continued to flourish and new editions are still being issued. In 1990 Mensa awarded the game its Select Award and "Games Magazine" inducted it into its Hall of Fame.
7. Which popular online game had its start as a tabletop game with characters including wizards, warriors, clerics and bards?

This is the "Granddaddy" of all roleplaying games some say. It was designed by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson and first published in 1973
8. If you were presented with this board game you would discover that the equipment included a game board, a deck of cards without the numbers 6 and 9, and 16 pawns. Do you know which "apologetic" game I have presented you with?

Answer: "Sorry"

"Sorry" was first published in 1934 and is a variation of the classic Indian game "Parcheesi". The aim is to be first around the board - back to your own home space. Along the way as you knock opponents off the board you get to say "Sorry"!
9. Which popular game gave its name to a phrase used by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1954 to express the possibility that if one country turned to Communism then neighbouring countries would do too?

Answer: Dominoes

The Domino Effect is the phrase that President Eisenhower used. If many dominoes, on their edges, were lined up in a straight line and the first one gently touched there would be a "knock on" effect resulting in each domino felling the next.
10. This is a strategic board game whose aim is complete world domination. It was invented by French film director Albert Lamorisse and originally released in 1957 under the name "La Conquete du Monde" ("The Conquest of the World"). What is the name by which it is now known?

Director Albert Lamorisse was well known in France for his films including "Le Ballon Rouge" ("The Red Balloon") 1956, which won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. "Risk" was the only game he invented.
