Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Naturally, microbreweries are distinguished by the volume of beer they produce per year. Roughly, what is the maximum number of barrels a brewery can produce annually and qualify for the "micro" moniker?

Answer: 15,000

Standards vary from area to area (I did say "roughly"), but this is a pretty reliable figure. To put this into perspective, Anheuser-Busch's output is about 120 million barrels per year -- that's 8,000 times that of most micros!
2. Steam beer, brewed exclusively by San Francisco's Anchor Brewing Co., is the only beer style indigenous to U.S. By what name is steam beer also known?

Answer: California Common

Steam beer was invented during the California gold rush of the 1840's, and is beer using lager yeast at warmer, ale temperature. The name allegedly comes from a hissing sound it makes during the brewing process.
3. Enjoying a quality microbrew can often be a visual as well as gustatory experience. Which micro features label graphics by British artist Ralph Steadman?

Answer: Flying Dog

Steadman is best known for illustrating the work of Hunter S. Thompson, including "Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas." Flying Dog crafted Gonzo Imperial Porter in honor of Thompson.
4. Naming beers is part of the fun of microbrewing. Which of the following inventively-named beers is brewed by Ska Brewing in Durango, CO?

Answer: Mexican Logger

Mexican Logger, fittingly, is a Mexican style lager. Old Leghumper is from Thirsty Dog Brewing, Butt Monkey is crafted by Lion Brewery in Wilkes-Barre, PA. While I thought I had made up Deez Nut Brown myself, it turns out Law Brewing Co. actually brews it!
5. IPA's have become a popular style in recent years, and nowadays hopheads have scores of aggressively hopped ales from which to partake. What is the oldest IPA made in the U.S.?

Answer: Ballantine IPA

Ballantine dates from the early 20th century, pre-dating the others by at least 50 years.
6. The organic food movement is about 40 years old, but has really picked up steam lately. As usual, beermakers weren't far behind the curve. Which of these organic beers is not real?

Answer: Horizon Dunkel

Staggering Elk Lager is from Estes Park Brewing Co., Natureland is from Pacific Western, and Sustainable Organic Porter is made by Brooklyn Brewing Co., who use 100% wind-power!
7. Beer snobbery is not uncommon among connoisseurs of micros. Stone Brewing company appears to have no shortage of cockiness, with their flagship Arrogant Bastard Ale. Which of Stone's brews is the most potent?

Answer: Stone Old Guardian Barley Wine

Old Guardian weighs in at a hefty 11.26% ABV, followed by the Imperial Russian Stout at 10.8%, then Double Bastard at 10%, and the Ruination IPA at a mere 7.7%. What hubris!
8. "Off-centered beer for off-centered people" is the motto for what outside-the-box brewery?

Answer: Dogfish Head

My unofficial favorite brewery. Among Dogfish Head's off-kilter repertoire is its Chicory Stout, made with organic coffee, St. John's wort, licorice root, and of course chicory.
9. Small operations have given brewmasters the liberty to experiment with different techniques and unusual ingredients. What atypical ingredient is not currently found in any commercial micros?

Answer: mushrooms

A number of organic ale producers make ale with hemp. Oysters have traditionally been used in some stouts, including Yards' Love Stout (as an aphrodisiac, naturally). Re the quinoa: Belgium's Mongozo makes a quinoa beer, but there are no domestic brewers in the USA who use a quinoa recipe.
10. For the last question, I'm going to bring it back to my home state. What Pennsylvania micro is dedicated exclusively to traditional German styles?

Answer: Penn

Penn Brewery was founded by Tom Pastorius, great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandson of Franz Pastorius, who was a friend of William Penn & the settler of Germantown, PA. Pennsylvania has a rich German heritage, & who knows beer better than the Deutsch?
