Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First, I pick my character's race, and I choose to play a tiefling. What is a tiefling?

Answer: Someone descended from a devil or demon

Tieflings have been in Dungeons and Dragons since 3rd edition. They often have devil-like characteristics like horns, tails, and red (or other unusually colored) skin.
2. Next, I have to pick my class. I want my character to be an intelligent spell caster who learned how to do magic through years of study. What class should I pick?

Answer: Wizard

Wizards use intelligence to cast spells and learn new spells by writing them in a spellbook. Warlocks and sorcerers are also classes in 5e, but they use charisma to cast spells. Warlocks get their power through pacts with powerful beings (such as fey or devils), and sorcerers are born with magical power.
3. Next, I have to pick a background. Which one of these backgrounds is an option in the 5th edition Player's Handbook?

Answer: Sage

Sage is a background for all characters who used to be scholars or experts in some field of study before they began their adventures. While these characters may be scholars or scribes (or belong to the sorcerer class), the official name for the background is sage.
4. Now that I've figured out my race, class, and background, I have to determine my ability scores for the six main abilities in Dungeons and Dragons. Which of the following is not one of the main abilities?

Answer: Spirit

The six ability scores are strength, constitution, dexterity, intelligence, wisdom, and charisma. The four options presented here (including spirit) are actually the four main abilities in Ryuutama, a much more obscure (but very fun) RPG.
5. I also get to choose a few skills that my character is proficient in. Which of the following school subjects is one of the skills available to me?

Answer: History

History is an intelligence-based skill, along with arcana, religion, nature, and investigation.
6. Now, it's time to figure out how many hit points my character has. Which of my ability scores will I use for this step?

Answer: Constitution

While a high dexterity may make my character harder to hit, a character's starting hit points are calculated by adding their constitution modifier to the size of their class's hit die.
7. As a tiefling, I get the feature darkvision, which allows my character to see in the dark up to 60 feet. However, this feature is not unique to tieflings. Which of these other races also gets darkvision?

Answer: Dwarf

As it turns out, 5e gives almost everyone darkvision! Halflings, humans, and dragonborn are the only three races in the Player's Handbook that don't have it.
8. Since my character can do magic, I next get to pick which spells they know. First, I pick some "level 0" spells that my character can cast an unlimited number of times each day. What is the name of this type of spell?

Answer: Cantrip

These spells are called cantrips, which is an archaic term referring to a spell or trick. The other three are all terms related to magic in D&D, but enchantment is a school of magic, prestidigitation is the name of a specific cantrip, and somatic is a term for spells that must be cast using hand motions.
9. I choose to learn the spell Chill Touch, which I can use to damage an enemy. What type of damage does this spell do?

Answer: Necrotic

Despite the name, Chill Touch does not do cold damage. Instead, on a successful hit, it does 1d8 necrotic damage and prevents the target from regaining any hit points for the next round.
10. Finally, in addition to my spells, I get to start with a simple weapon. Which of the following weapons would count as a simple weapon?

Answer: Dagger

Wizards actually don't get proficiency in all simple weapons, but nevertheless, daggers are simple weapons and one of the few weapons that wizards can use. The other three are considered martial weapons and can only be used by classes like fighter, rangers, and barbarians that focus primarily on physical power.
