Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. While it is most commonly thought of as a food, the marshmallow plant has been used as a medicinal herb for over 2000 years. Which of these is NOT one of its common medical uses?

Answer: Diabetes

Marshmallows are high in sugar, and therefore would be contra-indicated for patients taking diabetes medication. Marshmallow root has been used for sore throats since the days of the ancient Egyptians. It has also been shown in medical studies to relieve irritated mucus membranes and as an effective treatment for indigestion and stomach ulcers.
The name for the marshmallow plant, Althea Officinalis, comes from the Greek word althainein, to heal.
2. For several decades, the best selling marshmallow brand in the United States has been "Jet-Puffed". What company brand is on bags of "Jet-Puffed"?

Answer: Kraft

While Kraft Foods marshmallow division was taken over by Favorite Foods in 1996, they left the name "Kraft" on the bags of marshmallows.
Doumak is another large marshmallow manufacturer, producing the "Campfire" and "Rocky Mountain" brands. Hershey specializes in candy, although marshmallow is used in some of their products. Dean focuses primarily on dairy products.
3. Any good quiz on marshmallows must have a question on "Peeps." What shape gave the marshmallow candy its name?

Answer: Baby Chicks

Peeps, a product of the Just Born candy company, began in 1953 as yellow chicks. The product line has expanded to include the other three shapes, with pumpkins at Halloween and trees at Christmas. Peeps have become part of popular culture, with competitions for art created from Peeps in several US cities. The product has also been the subject of facetious scientific inquiry, to test its supposed "indestructibility."
4. For decades, campers have enjoyed S'Mores, a marshmallow based treat. Which of the following could you leave out if you were preparing to make S'Mores?

Answer: Mayonnaise

S'Mores are produced by roasting marshmallows and placing the gooey result between two graham crackers along with a piece of chocolate. Although the exact origins of the S'More are uncertain, references to the snack can be found as early as 1925. The flavor is so popular that Hershey has created a marshmallow and graham cracker candy bar and Pop Tarts has created a S'Mores flavor.
5. For over 80 years, Southerners have enjoyed the marshmallow-based treat known as the Moon Pie. What Southern city calls itself the birthplace of Moon Pies?

Answer: Chattanooga, Tennessee

The first Moon Pies were made in Chattanooga in the early 1930s. The marshmallow treat has become an iconic part of Southern culture. It is often teamed up with RC Cola, a popular southern soft drink.
Mobile, Alabama has actually rung in the new year several times by raising a large (12 foot) Moon Pie 200 feet above the city. They ordered a 55 pound, 45 thousand calorie Moon Pie for their 2008 New Year celebration.
6. While there are a variety of breakfast cereals containing marshmallows, which has marketed itself as "magically delicious"?

Answer: Lucky Charms

Lucky Charms were first marketed by General Mills in 1964. The cereal contains marshmallow bits in the shape of hearts, shooting stars, horseshoes, clovers, blue moons, rainbow, balloons and hourglasses. Trix, also by General Mills, does not contain marshmallow pieces. Count Chocula, also by General Mills, contains chocolate flavored marshmallow pieces.
Marshmallow Mateys are a competitor to Lucky Charms made by Malto-Meal.
7. One of the most popular uses for marshmallows has been in combination with Kellogg's Rice Krispies as "Rice Krispies Treats". When was this popular snack treat invented?

Answer: 1939

Malitta Jensen and Mildred Day, home economists at Kellogg's, are the geniuses behind Rice Krispie Treats (Or Rice Krispies Squares as they are called in Canada). Since 1939, the recipe has been changed in many ways: adding caramel, peanut butter, nuts or chocolate are all modifications.
8. What type of ice cream contains marshmallow in its mixture?

Answer: Rocky Road

Rocky Road is chocolate ice cream with nuts and marshmallows. While its origins are disputed, Rocky Road has been around since the 1930s.
Neapolitan traditionally contains vanilla, chocolate and strawberry flavored ice cream. Chunky Monkey, a Ben and Jerry's brand, contains fudge and walnuts. Chubby Hubby, also by Ben and Jerry's, contains peanut butter, pretzels and fudge in vanilla ice cream -- but no marshmallow.
9. Mallomars, a chocolate and marshmallow cracker cookie, produced by Nabisco, are a huge favorite with residents of what major American city?

Answer: New York City

Mallomars were created in New Jersey in 1913, and remain popular with New Yorkers. Nabisco sells roughly 70 percent of all Mallomars in the New York area. Mallomars are a seasonal treat, sold from October to April. Many New Yorkers hoard stocks of them to last the summer.
Mallomars have become part of popular culture, appearing in films such as "When Harry Met Sally" (1989) and on episodes of "Seinfeld," "Gilmore Girls" and "The Sopranos."
10. In what film do Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray face the threat of an enormous Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man?

Answer: Ghostbusters

Near the end of "Ghostbusters" (1984), the heroes are confronting an ancient God who demands they choose a destroyer. Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd) thinks of the Stay-Puft Man, an image from childhood that was non-threatening. The marshmallow spokesman is somewhat more threatening when he is 100 feet tall.
