Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the game of "Operation", what is the name of the character that is having his body parts removed?

Answer: Cavity Sam

The name of the comic like character is Cavity Sam. He is wired to let you know if you fail while trying to perform an operation to remove one of his body parts. The name of the game is to try and remove humorously named body parts from Cavity Sam with a pair of tweezers that are wired so that a buzzer goes off in case you touch the sides of the opening.

This opening is barely larger than the body part you are removing.
2. Which toy company marketed "Operation" when it was released in 1965?

Answer: Milton Bradley

"Operation" was first produced by the Milton Bradley Company. Today it is marketed by Hasbro who has attempted through the years to keep the game fresh. There are many variations on the game.
3. The original idea for the game was the brainchild of John Spinello who created the game for which of the following reasons?

Answer: He needed it for a school project

John Spinello was a University of Illinois student studying Industrial Design when he came up with original version of the game for a school project. The assignment had been to design a toy. The Marvin Glass Associates Company bought the rights to the original game and hired John Spinello on the spot.
4. In the original version of the game, players were not removing body parts. In fact the original version was based on searching openings in a desert for which valuable commodity?

Answer: Water

In the original game players were searching the desert for buckets of water in water holes. After the game was bought by Milton Bradley the game was altered into attempting to remove body parts. The board was basically the same, the wiring the same, the board just had a different image on the front and different things in the openings.
5. In May 2004, the Hasbro Company released a "Shrek" version of "Operation". Which one of these options was NOT one of the comical ailments found in the game?

Answer: Nose wart

A nose wart would stick out and is not part of the "Operation Skill Game: Shrek Version". Other maladies that the lovable Shrek is suffering from include Slugs&Grubs, Frog in the Throat, Green Thumb and Onion Breath.
6. In 2006, after a new hit movie had come out, Hasbro introduced another new version of the game in which the players operated on which Marvel Comic book hero?

Answer: Spider-man

It might have helped if you knew that Superman, Batman, and Aquaman are all characters from D.C. comics (which I did not). The only Marvel comic hero on the list is Spider-man. In this version of the game players attempt to operate on Spider-man whose maladies include a crook in the neck, wall-crawler knees, and broken web-shooter.
7. Trying to keep the game new and fresh, Hasbro released a "Simpsons" version of the game in 2007 in which Homer Simpson is operated on. In this version, if you botch the operation what does Homer do?

Answer: He screams

In this version, if the operation is botched, the patient (Homer) screams. He will also sometimes spew out some of his trademark lines from the show, such as "This is not good"! Homer suffers from maladies such a pot belly, which requires the removal of a saucepan shaped object from his abdomen and bowler's thumb from which the player must attempt to remove a bowling pin shaped object.
8. In 2008 a new version of the regular game included some updated maladies. Which of these is NOT one of them?

Answer: Airplane Ear

Airplane Ear is the odd one out in this list. All the others are part of the new and updated version of the game released by Hasbro in 2008. If you are successful in the removal of the body part, you can press Cavity Sam's nose and he will say "Tah-Da" congratulating the player on a job well done.
9. In 2010, Hasbro released a new version of the game in Great Britain in which the patient being operated on is named Sick Betty and bears a striking resemblance to Queen Elizabeth II.

Answer: False

This is completely false. While some folks might find this to be a funny possibility, I really do not think it will happen. In 2009 Hasbro did release a "Dr. Who" edition of the game in Great Britain in which the patient was a Dalek. The game was moderately successful.
10. In 2004 Hasbro had a contest where fans could vote for a new malady to be added to the original game of "Operation". Which one of the following choices won and was added to the next year's batch of games?

Answer: Brain freeze

Brain freeze was the malady that won the contest and was added to the game. It refers to the intense pain that you can get when you eat or drink something cold too fast.
