Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Castle Panic," there are six separate arcs, divided into three different colors, two numbers for each color. The soldiers in the card deck also represent the same three colors. Which of the following colors is NOT used to represent arcs or soldiers?

Answer: Purple

The board is made up of six arcs, two of each color, which include Forest, Archer, Knight, and Swordsman rings. The cards played to attack a Monster must match the color and soldier type the Monster is in. The color purple is representative of "special" cards used in the game.

There are three basic types of Monsters: Goblins, Orcs, and Trolls. Goblins start with one health point, Orcs start with two points, and Trolls have three points. One card played against a Monster counts as one point of damage. A Monster also loses health points when it tears down castle structures. Once slain, a Monster is removed from the board.
2. Which "Castle Panic" structures can be rebuilt with Bricks and Mortar?

Answer: Walls

Castle structures are the components that the players protect from the incoming horde of Monsters. Whether by Monsters tearing down the walls and towers, or by Giant Boulders rolling into them, the castle structures eventually will fall. However, only castle walls can be rebuilt by playing both Brick and Mortar together. Castle towers, once destroyed, cannot be rebuilt, fueling the challenge, because the players only win if at least one castle tower remains standing after clearing all Monsters from the board.
3. There are four rings on the board that represent the field of battle before reaching the castle: Swordsman, Knight, Archer, and Forest rings. Can Monsters in "Castle Panic" be attacked or slain in the Forest ring?

Answer: No

The Forest ring on the board is the furthest ring from the castle. When Monsters are placed on the board, they are placed in the Forest ring, where they cannot be attacked. Once they leave the Forest ring, they can be attacked, until they reach the Castle ring, which requires Special cards to affect the Monster in the Castle ring.
4. Along with the corresponding color hit cards, players use Special cards to aid in their defense of the castle. Which Special "Castle Panic" card is a character that can instantly slay any Monster, even in the Castle ring?

Answer: Barbarian

Special cards are designated by the color purple. The Barbarian can be played in any arc except the Forest ring, and instantly slays any Monster, regardless of health. The Barbarian is one of only a few cards that can be played within the Castle ring.

Other cards are Tar, which sticks a Monster to that spot for the entire turn, preventing that Monster from moving for that turn, and Drive Him Back, which forces one Monster all the way back to the Forest ring.
5. We've gone over the four rings on the board before the castle. Of the four, which ring on the "Castle Panic" board is the closest to the castle?

Answer: Swordsman

The castle is comprised of six towers, one for each section, placed at the center of the board. A castle wall is placed in front of each castle tower. The Swordsman ring is the closest ring to the castle structures. The next ring back is the Knight ring, followed by the Archer ring.

The Forest ring is the furthest ring from the castle, and is the ring that Monsters are placed in when they are put on the board.
6. One of the tokens pulled in "Castle Panic" is the Giant Boulder. When pulled, the die is rolled and the boulder is released from the Forest ring of the numbered arc rolled on the die. When rolling the die for a Giant Boulder, if no castle structures are in the way to stop the boulder, what happens?

Answer: The boulder rolls all the way through that numbered section and the section beyond the castle, killing all Monsters in its path

In their fierce desire to see the castle fall, the Monsters occasionally roll Giant Boulders toward the castle, heedless of their own forces in its path. The boulders roll through the numbered arc that was rolled on the die, and they do not stop unless there is a castle structure in the way.

They will be stopped by either a wall or a tower, destroying that structure in the process. If no structures are in the way, the boulder rolls through the numbered section rolled from the die and the arc beyond the castle.

In any case, all Monsters in the affected arc or arcs are immediately slain, regardless of health.
7. At the end of the team's attack phase in "Castle Panic," the Monsters play their phase. The first part of their phase is moving all Monsters on the board one ring closer to the castle. The second is placing new Monsters in the Forest ring. How many Monsters are played during that phase if no special tokens are drawn?

Answer: Two

After the Monster movement closer to the castle, two Monster tokens are drawn and played one at a time. If a Monster is drawn, it is placed on the board in the numbered section rolled on the die. If it is not a Monster card, the play depends on what is drawn. Tokens include additional movement of Monsters based on the color of the rings they are in, movement clockwise or counter clockwise, and plague tokens, which force players to discard hit cards based on what ring is affected by the plague. There are also a few tokens that require additional tokens to be drawn in addition to the two tokens drawn during the typical Monster phase.
8. There are four Boss Monsters leading the charge against the castle. Which of the "Castle Panic" Boss Monsters does NOT affect Monsters on the board in any way when it is placed?

Answer: Goblin King

Boss Monsters are pulled during the Monster phase, but when they are placed on the board, they have different affects that wreak havoc on the defenders of the castle.

The Healer heals one point of damage for all Monsters on the board. The Troll Mage and Orc Warlord both cause Monsters on the board to move one ring closer to the castle. The Orc Warlord only pushes Monsters forward who are in the same color arc that the Orc Warlord is placed. The Troll Mage moves all Monsters on the board forward one ring closer to the castle.

The only Boss Monster who does not affect Monsters on the board is the Goblin King. When drawn, the Goblin King is placed on the board in the Forest ring within the arc number rolled on the die. Once placed, three additional Monster tokens are drawn and resolved.
9. If a "Castle Panic" Monster reaches the Castle ring, no hit cards except for a few Special cards can damage or slay that Monster. While moving in the Castle ring, which direction do the Monsters move as they tear down the castle towers?

Answer: Clockwise

Monsters move in a clockwise direction around the interior of the castle. As they move, they tear down castle towers, taking a point of damage in the process. If the Monsters continue for long enough, moving in a clockwise direction, eventually they will succeed in tearing down all castle towers, resulting in the players' defeat.
10. We know that "Castle Panic" is a cooperative game. Players win and lose as a team. The final question is, can "Castle Panic" be played alone?

Answer: Yes

Yes, indeed! "Castle Panic" has a solitaire version that only varies in one way from the team version. Playing solo, the player can discard and re-draw two cards instead of one, since there are no other players to trade cards with. Otherwise, the gameplay is the same. The solo player wins if at least one tower is standing after all Monsters are defeated.
