Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I live in England, and even though this particular board game infuriates me at times, I would love to visit each of the places in London featured on the board. I've already caught trains at Kings Cross, walked down Oxford Street, and been to Trafalgar Square. Which game am I thinking of?

Answer: Monopoly

The squares on the standard UK Monopoly board are mostly streets and train stations in London. Players move around the board, buying streets and building houses and hotels on them. Other places included in the game are Whitehall, Fleet Street, and Mayfair. Even though I've been to London plenty of times, I still have a lot of exploring to do to be able to cross this off my bucket list!
2. I like doing things with the people I care about, rather than spending money on gifts. I also like cooking and wanted to do a twist on the conventional English picnic. So one Valentines Day I cooked an Asian-style picnic for my partner. Which of these foods did I NOT include?

Answer: Blackberries

Blackberries don't grow naturally in Asia, but they do grow in Europe and North America. The other three options are all found in Asian cuisine. Poppadoms are crispy, thin and discs made with dough. They're usually eaten as an accompaniment to a meal and originated in the Indian subcontinent. Samosas are also native to the Indian subcontinent, as well as other areas of Asia.

They usually have a soft pastry shell and a savory filling, such as potatoes, onions, minced meat, and spices. Variations of spring rolls can be found in cultures worldwide. Like samosas, they're fillings wrapped in pastry, but they're cylindrical instead of triangular.
3. When I was very young, my grandma taught me to knit, but I never got past a small rectangle - the kind of thing a mouse could use as a blanket. One day I'd like to be able to knit something a little more exciting. I'll start off with the most basic kind of stitch - the knit stitch. What kind of pattern would I create?

Answer: Garter stitch

A garter stitch is what you get when you knit stitch a whole line; it's the name of the pattern that forms. 'Pearl stitch' is spelled wrong - it should be 'purl' - and it's an individual stitch, not a whole pattern. Seed stitch is a type of pattern, but it's more complicated than the garter stitch. Sam's stitch isn't a real thing, I made that one up.
4. When I was in America I had the opportunity to shoot firearms, but gun controls in the UK are far more strict. In which of these firearms-acquiring instances would I be acting legally within firearm laws in the UK?

Answer: I buy a certified antique gun for a collection.

The 2006 Violent Crime Reduction Act made it illegal to create, sell, or import imitation firearms that look real. There are some exceptions, though, such as an imitation for a museum or a play. Air rifles that use a self-contained gas cartridge systems are explicitly prohibited in UK law. Nail guns aren't considered a firearm under UK law because they have a 'legitimate purpose' according to a 2016 Home Office 'Guide on Firearms Licensing Law'.
5. Everyone wants to get a little healthier. What is the main benefit of using a treadmill?

Answer: To improve cardiovascular fitness

A treadmill is an indoor alternative to running outside. The speed of the conveyor belt can usually be adjusted to match the runner's pace, or to push them a bit harder. Personally, I like using a treadmill because I'm a bit of a rusher. If I'm running outside I tend to sprint and get worn out too quickly, so my heart doesn't get much of a work out and I don't build up my endurance.

The incline of the belt can also be adjusted on some treadmills for a harder workout, and to practice running up hills.
6. I'm getting married soon - a big bucket list item - and I plan to make a scrapbook of the day. Which of these types of paper would I be least likely to use in my decoration of a scrapbook page?

Answer: Corrugated iron

Decoupage paper is patterned, so I might use it as an interesting background for a page or photograph. Mulberry paper is handmade from the bark of a paper mulberry tree. If you wet it before tearing, it leaves a nice frayed edge. I might use this kind of paper for backing a photo, too. Tissue paper is very thin and can tear quite easily. Even so, I could use it in a scrapbook. Corrugated iron, on the other hand, is thick - too thick to use in a scrapbook without bending the pages around it when it's closed!
7. One day I hope to have a garden where I can grow my own fruit and vegetables. Which of these are seasonal in the UK winter?

Answer: Cauliflower

Cauliflowers can be harvested in summer and in winter. Strawberries and blackberries are summer fruits, though neither are actually berries because they are the product of multiple ovaries of the same plant, not just one. Onions are seasonal in late summer, as well.
8. With that garden, I hope to have a house. It'll be my first attempt at interior decorating. If I want the living room to be light and airy, what colour should I paint the ceiling?

Answer: Cream

Dark colours on the ceiling can make a room feel small and close, like the ceiling is pressing down on you. Sometimes, though, black ceilings can look dramatic and intense if they match other colours in the room. Dark colours can also work on high ceilings to make a room appear smaller and cosier if it felt empty with a lighter colour.
9. Something that was on my bucket list took place underwater. I did it in a swimming pool, but one day I'd like to do it in the ocean. What was I doing?

Answer: Scuba diving

Scuba diving is the only option that takes place under the water - if you're doing it right. I had the opportunity to go in a swimming pool and it was great to practise in a relatively safe environment. Some people have trouble altering their breathing. It did take a while to get used to breathing through my mouth, rather than through my nose!
10. Finally, the most exciting thing on my bucket list is sometimes called an extreme sport, though it doesn't require any level of skill and you don't need to be particularly fit to do it. It requires an ankle harness and an elastic cord, what is it?

Answer: Bungee jumping

Bungee jumpers have a harness around their ankles, which is attached to a thick elastic cord. They jump, free-falling until the rebound from the cord pulls them back. I jumped from a 160ft crane, but there are lots of other options, too. People have also jumped from bridges, hot air balloons, and helicopters. One of the highest fixed bungee platforms is at Royal Gorge Bridge in Colorado at 321m. Exciting!
