Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Individually wrapped in waxy, brown, white and orange paper, twisted at each end, a small, chewy chocolate-flavored confection. 3 for 1 cent. What are they?

Answer: Tootsie Rolls

Still popular today, Tootsie Rolls come in single-serving and family- sized portions. Also a central component of the "Tootsie Roll Pop."
2. Covered with a sugar glaze, these small, yellow candies first taste sweet then tart then sweet, tart, etc. 5 for 1 cent.

Answer: lemon drops

Also guaranteed to stick to the car seat, where, when retrieved a week later, still had the same effect on young taste buds. BTW, sour balls came in many different colors and weren't covered with a sweet glaze.
3. A five pack of a sugary sweet liquid sealed in wax bottles, complete with its own carrying case. 1 pack 5 cents. What were these novelties called?

Answer: Nik-L-Nips

Composed almost entirely of sugar and FDA #6 red, #8 green and #3 yellow, the fun was in chewing the waxy bottles upon finishing the liquid. The company, Nik-L-Nips, Inc. ran into trouble when they had to raise the price to 10 cents, thus making the Nik-L-Nips brand a misnomer.
4. Paper straws filled with sugar and tart flavorings like orange and lime. A penny a piece.

Answer: Pixy Stix

These things would have you bouncing off the ceiling, being mostly sugar. And remember how easy it was to accidently inhale the contents of the straw. Many of us may be suffering from Pixy Stick lung.
5. Individually wrapped, bright, day-glo red and layers of various colored cinnamon. 1 cent each.

Answer: Atomic Fire Balls

Jawbreakers came in different flavors. Only the red hot, Atomic Fire Ball was cinnamon based. They were so hot you had to hold them between your teeth periodically to give your tongue a chance to revive.
6. Is there anyone who hasn't enjoyed a slab of Bazooka Bubble Gum? What were the colors that appeared on the wrapper? 1 cent each.

Answer: blue, white and red

For a penny you got a chunk of pink gum (scored so it could be split in two), a comic, a fortune and, if you saved up enough comics (just over 1 million) you could send away for your own BB gun. Still collecting.
7. Red or black licorice, milled to the thickness of a sturdy twine. 1 cent per roll.

Answer: licorice whips

Great for wrapping around stuff (like the dog) and for flicking at your sister. ("Knock it off before someone loses an eye.")
8. Brown and barrel shaped, these penny candy treats lasted a long time and had a distinct flavor. What was it? 1 cent each.

Answer: root beer

You really got your money's worth here. For 1 penny you could make a single root beer barrel last a good half-hour.
9. They come in a box (5 cents), they're shaped like baked beans, they're red and they're hot. What are they?

Answer: Hot Tamales

A hard sugar shell and a soft cinnamon-y center, these things turned your tongue red for a week.
10. These tasty morsels were shaped like a cross between a Native American woman and an Egyptian mummy. What was the name of this chocolate-flavored penny candy?

Answer: Chocolate Babies

A little chewy, not too juicy, in the same family as a Tootsie Roll.
