Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The famous candy came from an idea of how military personnel used to eat snacks while they were out on the terrain. What is the name of the military war that aroused this idea in the Mars Company founder?

Answer: The Spanish Civil War

As rumor has it around the candy mill, the Mars Company founder, Forrest Mars, Sr., was visiting Spain. While there he noticed that soldiers in the military were eating pellet sized snacks out of a long tube. Those pellet snacks were coated with a sugary texture, that Mars thought was ingenious. Upon his arrival back to the United States, he decided to create something similar to the military type snack. That is how the idea for M & M's came to be.
2. In 1941, M & M's were first sold to the public. What form of packaging were the first candies distributed in?

Answer: A long cardboard tube

After Mars, Sr. created the sweet tasting candies, he decided to sell them in cardboard tubes, similar to what the soldiers in the Spanish Civil War had their tasty pellets in. Everyone was amazed at the reception the public gave those tasty treats. In 1948, the packaging that these candies were sold in, changed from a cardboard tube to a small brown pouch. M & M's are still one of the top-ranked candies in the United States.
3. Almost since the inception of these tasty treats, the slogan for them has been: 'Milk Chocolate Melts In Your Mouth, Not In Your Hands'. In which year did this slogan first appear in television advertisements?

Answer: 1954

As the delicious treats drew attention around the country, once again the founder of the Mars Company decided to up the ante and add color coated candies to the original brown colored sweet. In 1954, the red, yellow, and green M & M's were added and the color sensation was an instant hit with the public.

It seemed to Mars, Sr. that these candies seemed not to melt in a person's hands, so he and his associates came up with the wonderful and true slogan 'Milk Chocolate Melts In Your Mouth, Not In Your Hands'.
4. In 1976, what color M & M was removed from this sweet treat?

Answer: Red

The red M & M was removed from the color mix of those delicious candies, because of the red food coloring dye that was used for that specific color. As it turned out, the problem was the special red dye food coloring that the Mars Company used. The company decided to go along with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and remove the red M & M entirely.

However, in 1987, the red colored M & M was once again added back into the color mix, because of great demand from the public.
5. In 1997, the Mars Company gave a certain M & M color their own personality, and that same color sweet also had their own autobiography, that was created by the Mars Company, entitled 'I Melt For No One'. What is the color of this sweet treat that had everyone wanting to try this perfectly colored confection?

Answer: Green

Upon creating a personality for the truly magnificent green M & M, everyone that enjoyed M & M Candies wanted to try this sweet confection. The personality that they created for the green M & M, was that of a female. Thus, making 'her' the only female in the color bunch. 'She' is considered to be a modern woman, and all the 'male' M & M's are in love with her. All of this information can be found at www.global.mms.com. I hope that you enjoy this sweet little quiz.
