Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the dish which a lot of Egyptians eat for breakfast?

Answer: Ful Medames

Ful Medames, or also known as Ful, is a national dish which is eaten by not only the Egyptians, but also many others of the Arab world. It consists of fava beans, which are slowly cooked and seasoned with olive oil, garlic, cumin, salt and sprinkled with parsley.
2. Russians enjoy a variety of breakfast foods but what is their version of porridge/oatmeal called?

Answer: Kasha

Zavtrak is the Russian word for breakfast. Zakuska is the Russian for an appetizer and Masha I thought I'd made up but it turns out it's the diminutive of Maria in Russian!

Kasha has been around for centuries, traditionally a peasant's breakfast. It can be made with any type of grain, either cooked plain or with sweet/savoury ingredients added. It's often topped with sour cream.
3. What is "Chakchouka"?

Answer: Eggs poached in a pepper stew

Chakchouka is a popular breakfast especially in Algeria and Tunisia. It is prepared with olive oil, paprika, tomatoes, onions, garlic, green and red bell peppers and is cooked slowly until a thickish sauce is formed. Eggs are then broken on top of the mixture and cooked until set in a covered pan. This is eaten with pita bread. The eggs are optional.
4. Most of us have heard about the great British breakfast but what is the spicy pepper, sage and marjoram sausage, sold in rings, called?

Answer: Cumberland

Best sausage to have with breakfast in my opinion.

Cumberland sausage is a course cut sausage sold in long rings and made from pork.

It's been a specialty in Cumbria since medieval times and has now been added to the "Protected Geographical Status classification under the European Commission."
5. What does the Filipino word "almusal" mean?

Answer: Breakfast

Almusal just means "breakfast" in Filipino. There are so many different varieties of wonderful breakfasts which are eaten in the Philippines that it would be difficult to name even a few. One of my favourites was a fried rice dish which was served with fish. I cannot remember what this was called but if anyone can help me with a name, I'd appreciate that :)
6. What is congee?

Answer: Porridge

In my opinion, congee is the most disgusting stuff I have ever had to set eyes on! It is rice which has been boiled to almost resemble mashed potato. It is a popular breakfast dish for many of the Asian nations and each nation serves it with some different herbs, meat or almost anything. Not for me, thanks ;)
7. What is a Mexican bread, often eaten with breakfast, called?

Answer: Bolillos

Bolillo is a savoury bread originating in Mexico but also eaten all over Central America.

There was a strong French presence in Mexico around the time of the American Civil War and the Bolillo is sometimes called "Pan Frances" and dipped into a cup of milky coffee, the most common type of French breakfast.

Bolillo is also cooked in a large stone oven, as traditional French bread is.

If this doesn't sound very filling, the Mexicans also eat a wide range of other breakfast foods, many being very Spanish in origin but just a little bit more spicy!
8. Which word translates to "bouncer" or "throwing out" and is a popular Dutch breakfast dish?

Answer: Uitsmijter

The story goes that after a night of drinking, teenagers often ended up at someone's house and filled up on an "uitsmijter". The parents would wake up to the smell of eggs and ham cooking and I guess that was when the "throwing out" began. :)

An uitsmijter consists of two slices of toast, each topped with a nice slice of cheese. To that add a slice of ham and a fried egg and seasoning to taste. You shouldn't feel hungry for the rest of the day! Definitely not for dainty eaters.
9. What is the more common name for Sofkee, of Native American origin, eaten mostly in the South of the U.S.A?

Answer: Grits

Grits are yet another form of porridge/oatmeal but made with maize and boiled in either water or milk.

Grits can be as mushy concoction or fried, in oil or bacon fat, to form a solid rissole type dish.

They can be served with almost anything including Cheese, bacon, sausage, garlic and even seafood. Grits with prawns is popular in parts of South Carolina.
10. Many South Africans enjoy a British style breakfast but what extra food often accompanies it?

Answer: Chips

Don't eat breakfast? Never!

Although South Africa is culturally diverse, European foods play a large part in breakfast. But we've gone one better than the Brits, we often have chips French fries) with ours :)

Also, boerewors (Farmers sausage), a meaty spicy sausage, of Dutch and German origin is popular, and let's not forget the hot dog often served, called a Kaaskraaken, which is a mixture of pork, cheese and herbs.

A typical cooked breakfast for your hungry South African would be: sausages, bacon, eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms, toast and chips.
