Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What do gizzards, chitlins, and tripe have in common?

Answer: Organ meats

Gizzards are part of a chicken's digestive tract, chitlins are pig intestines, and tripe is cow's stomach.
2. What state is commonly associated with the term "Sandlapper"?

Answer: South Carolina

The term Sandlapper comes from poor settlers in the South who would eat clay and dirt when they didn't have any other means for food. This is also seen in some pregnant women, in which case it is called pica. Of course in pregnancy it is a sign of an iron deficiency rather than poverty.
3. Which of these is not commonly added to grits?

Answer: Pineapple

Eggs, bacon, sausage, and other breakfast items can be added to grits to enhance their flavor. My grandfather preferred grits prepared with milk instead of water but most people do prefer the water preparation. You can find shrimp 'n' grits on many a Southern restaurant menu.
4. In the North many people pour maple syrup on their pancakes. What kind of syrup do Southerners sometimes pour on their pancakes?

Answer: Sugar cane syrup

This syrup also goes well with fried fish.
5. What is not commonly found in Frogmore Stew?

Answer: Frog legs

Frogmore stew is also known as "Lowcountry Stew" or "Beaufort Boil". It can contain crabs/crab legs, corn, sausage, shrimp, potatoes, and seafood seasoning.
6. Chicken Bog is also referred to as Perlou.

Answer: true

This dish contains chicken, rice, and sausage. Some people also add bacon.
7. This Southern food was also the title of a popular movie starring Kathy Bates. What was it?

Answer: Fried Green Tomatoes

Fried green tomatoes are not very complicated. Green tomatoes are just red tomatoes that haven't quite ripened. You cut them up, batter them, and fry them. That's it.
8. Squirrel brains are not commonly enjoyed in the South.

Answer: True

More common in the Appalachian areas, squirrel brains are a common dish. Squirrel brains are thought to carry a disease similar to mad cow disease.
9. What seasons are commonly associated with pig pickins?

Answer: Fall and Winter

A pig pickin is basically a barbecue. A whole pig is barbecued and basically everyone picks meat off of the pig (hence the term "pig pickin"). Pig Pickins are commonly associated with football season and holidays such as Christmas.
10. Ham, cornbread, collards, and black-eyed peas are a traditional Easter meal in the South.

Answer: True

In addition, this meal is commonly served on New Year's Day. Ham is commonly served on Easter. Each item in the meal is supposed to bring good fortune in the new year. For instance, the collards represent wealth and the black-eyed peas represent good luck.
11. Which dessert is not commonly associated with the South?

Answer: Pumpkin pie

Pumpkin pie is eaten in the South but the others are more commonly associated with it. The only time my family ever sees Pumpkin pie is at Thanksgiving. Sweet potato pie seems to be more popular even when Pumpkin pie is offered too.
12. You have heard of Southerners frequently snacking on Moon Pies and washing them down with RC Colas. What is another popular snack in the South?

Answer: Roasted peanuts in a cola

I have seen quite a few people eat/drink this. First, you pour a small bag of roasted, shelled peanuts into a cold Pepsi. Then after you finish drinking the Pepsi you eat the peanuts. It doesn't sound very appetizing but it obviously is.
13. What is the official state beverage for South Carolina and Louisiana?

Answer: Milk

Milk was adopted as Louisiana's state beverage in 1983 and South Carolina's in 1984.
14. What Southern university is associated with blue cheese?

Answer: Clemson University

Clemson University began producing blue cheese in 1941.
15. What Southern state produces all types of North American whiskey except for two types?

Answer: Kentucky

The only two types that are not produced in Kentucky are Tennessee and Canadian.
