Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Braised beef or pork cheeks
Answer: Carrillada
This dish is made up of lean cuts of meat from the cheek of beef or pork. The cuts are then cooked over a slow heat which makes them very tender and then served with various sauces, which may differ from region to region.
2. Smoked spicy sausage
Answer: Chorizo
Chorizo is a type of pork sausage and it gets its red colouring from the use of paprika in its preparation. It is usually fermented, cured and smoked and can be eaten cold or hot. There are various varieties of chorizo, depending on the region of Spain.
3. Anchovies
Answer: Boquerones
Boquerones are anchovies that can be served fried or cold. When served cold they are referred to as "Boquerones en vinegre" being marinated in vinegar, olive oil and garnished with garlic and parsley. When fried they are referred to as "boquerones fritos" which is the most common in bars and restaurants.
4. Meatballs
Answer: Albondigas
Albondigas is ground meat rolled into balls. It is usually mixed with ground onion, breadcrumbs, egg, seasoning and butter. The meatballs are usually braised in a sauce with a tomato base. They can also be served as a main dinner dish, but personally I prefer them as a tapa in a bar with a glass of red wine.
5. Fried potatoes with spicy sauce
Answer: Patatas bravas
Patatas bravas are potatoes cut into irregular cubes, fried in oil and then served warm with a spicy sauce. The dish can also have aioli (garlic mayonnaise) poured over it, which also adds to the taste.
6. Fried and breadcrumbed leftovers
Answer: Croquettes
Croquettes can be made up of any leftovers, either vegetables, fish, ham, chicken or shrimp, which are rolled, breadcrumbed and fried. The croquette is usually shaped into cylinder or oval shape before being deep fried.
7. Spinach and chickpeas
Answer: Espinacas con garbanzos
Espinacas con garbanzos is chopped spinach and chickpeas cooked in olive oil in a fry pan and adding paprika and cumin. There is plenty of protein, and it makes a tasty and a healthy meal.
8. Black pudding
Answer: Morcilla
Morcilla is a blood sausage or known as a black pudding in some countries. The blood is cooked and dried and then mixed with a filler that solidifies when cooked. In Spain it is usually made from pork blood and fat which can also be mixed with onions or rice.
9. Small squid fried or grilled
Answer: Chipirones
Chipirones are small squid or cuttlefish usually battered and deep fried but can also be served grilled which is "chipirones a la plancha". Maybe some people are more familiar with the larger squid that can be cut into rings and fried and known as "calamares fritos" or "calamares a la Romana".
10. Spanish omelette
Answer: Tortilla de patatas
Tortillas de patatas in simply a Spanish omelette. It is made up of sliced potatoes, eggs, onions, salt and olive oil. All cooked together in a non -stick fry pan. It is often simply referred to as tortilla.
