Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I'm a Taurus myself, so I'm going to start this quiz off with my own sign. Which animal is the symbol for Taurus?

Answer: Bull

Taurus is ruled by the planet Venus, which it shares with Libra. It has a reputation for being stubborn (or bullish!), practical, sensual, and really liking food.
2. Which of these flowers is associated with the sign of Pisces?

Answer: Water lily

Presumably this is because of the water association, since Pisces is the sign of the fish and a water sign to boot. As for the others, lily of the valley is associated with Gemini, hyacinth with Virgo, and dandelion with Leo.
3. The star signs are associated with the four classical elements: Fire, Earth, Air and Water. Which of these is a fire sign?

Answer: Sagittarius

Sagittarius is one of the three fire signs. The fire signs are said to be dynamic and passionate, and quick to anger. Pisces is a water sign, and Capricorn and Virgo are earth signs.
4. Virgo is one of the 'human' signs - its symbol is the Virgin - but it is also associated with certain animals. Which of these animals are symbols of Virgo?

Answer: Domestic pets, such as cats and dogs

Virgo is associated with small furry mammals, such as rabbits and mice, and domestic pets like this adorable pug puppy, probably because of the sign's caring nature. The goat is the symbol of Capricorn, while seabirds such as the albatross are associated with Aquarius (an air sign represented by a guy carrying a jar of water, hence the air-water combination).
5. Each star sign is associated with certain countries and cities. Which of these countries is associated with Aquarius?

Answer: Russia

Other Aquarian countries include Sweden, Sri Lanka and Iran. Ireland is associated with Taurus, Australia with Sagittarius, and China with Libra.
6. Which metal - which shares its name with the sign's ruler - is a symbol of Gemini?

Answer: Mercury

As well as being a metal, Mercury is also the Roman name for Hermes, the Greek messenger god - quite fitting for a sign associated with communication and quickness. Virgo is also ruled by Mercury, though some astrologers have claimed there is another planet out there called Vulcan, which is its real ruler.
7. Each star sign is ruled by a planet, with the exceptions of Cancer (the Moon), Leo (the Sun), and Scorpio (Pluto, which is no longer a planet). Which planet is the ruler of Aries, and was originally the ruler of Scorpio as well?

Answer: Mars

The colour red is associated with Mars, although dark red shades such as garnet are Scorpio colours (and 'Ares', Mars' Greek name, does sound a bit like 'Aries'). It is a planet associated with action, physical energy levels, and the sex drive. Before Pluto was discovered, Scorpio was ruled by Mars. Likewise, Pisces used to share Jupiter with Sagittarius before Neptune was discovered.
8. Certain foods are also associated with each star sign. Which of these foods is associated with Capricorn?

Answer: Potatoes

A practical, no-nonsense sign like Capricorn would naturally be associated with plain fare such as potatoes, or the roast dinner in this photo. Watermelon and dairy foods are both associated with Cancer - the rationale for this is because Cancer is a water sign and associated with the breasts - and spicy foods are an Aries or Scorpio thing. (See previous information about Mars.)
9. Which of these gemstones are associated with the sign of Cancer?

Answer: Pearl

Pearls come from oysters which, like crabs, are sea creatures with shells. It is also the birth stone for the month of June, with the Sun switching to Cancer around 22nd June. Garnet is associated with Scorpio, but also with Capricorn and Aquarius as it is the birth stone for January. Diamond is associated with Aries, and Leo as the birth stone for August. Amethyst is the birth stone for February and is also associated with Aquarius and Pisces.
10. Not all signs are represented by animals or people. Which sign is represented by a set of scales?

Answer: Libra

You'll often see the figure of Justice as a woman holding scales, and Libra is often associated with the law and fair play. They also like to 'weigh' decisions before making them, according to star sign stereotypes, and prefer things to be 'balanced' and harmonious. Gemini is represented by the twins (in Greek and Roman myth, Pollux and Castor), Cancer's symbol is the crab and Aquarius is the water carrier.
