Question 1 of 10
1. Popular in North Carolina, you can also find this pork product in some grocery stores in South Carolina and Virginia, but if you get a craving for it anywhere else, you are probably out of luck. It goes by a couple of different names, but only one below is correct. Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. We've been drinking this soft drink in North Carolina since 1917 and for many years you could only find it in the Carolinas but now it's starting to show up in other areas of the country too. What's the name of this sweet red soda? Hint

Question 3 of 10

Question 5 of 10
5. Folks in North Carolina take their pork barbecue pretty seriously and intense debate can be waged over which type of NC barbecue is the best. What are the two types of North Carolina barbecue? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Opening their first location in 1973 in Fayetteville, North Carolina this buffet style chain is headquartered in Raleigh. Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. This last question is a tough one, because most people even in North Carolina don't know about this sauce. Hard to find outside of the Raleigh-Durham general area, this rich, tangy sauce is great on beef, pork, chicken (I even use it on baked potatoes instead of fattening butter and sour cream) and is one of my state's best kept secrets. When the bottle is empty it will have you "galloping" back to the store for more (and that's all the hint I'm going to give you!). Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Popular in North Carolina, you can also find this pork product in some grocery stores in South Carolina and Virginia, but if you get a craving for it anywhere else, you are probably out of luck. It goes by a couple of different names, but only one below is correct.

Answer: Livermush

Livermush resembles sausage, but when you buy it it's already cooked so you can make a sandwich right out of the package, throw it in the frying pan, whatever suits you. A very popular brand is made by Neese's Sausage Company and their name for it is Neese's Liver Pudding. Now, if you can get past the name and give it a try, it's actually delicious!
2. We've been drinking this soft drink in North Carolina since 1917 and for many years you could only find it in the Carolinas but now it's starting to show up in other areas of the country too. What's the name of this sweet red soda?

Answer: Cheerwine

Bottled in Salisbury, North Carolina, Cheerwine is a Carolina favorite. I can remember when my relatives from Washington, DC would visit, they would always take some Cheerwine back with them. Despite it's name, there's no alcohol in Cheerwine!
3. The menu at your favorite seafood restaurant may say "baby shrimp" or "popcorn shrimp" but in North Carolina it's commonly called by a different name in honor of a coastal North Carolina town.

Answer: Calabash Shrimp

Calabash is a small town on the North Carolina coast that is well known for their fried seafood.
4. If you saw the label on this hot sauce you would probably assume it's made in Houston, Dallas or maybe Austin. Look closely though and you will see that it is bottled in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Answer: Texas Pete

Texas Pete has been made by the T.W. Garner Food Company in Winston-Salem, North Carolina since 1929. I've seen people put this spicy sauce on everything from eggs to hamburgers.
5. Folks in North Carolina take their pork barbecue pretty seriously and intense debate can be waged over which type of NC barbecue is the best. What are the two types of North Carolina barbecue?

Answer: Eastern And Western Style

The difference between Eastern Style and Western Style is that ketchup is added to the BBQ sauce in Western Style and only the dark meat, from the pork shoulder, is used. Eastern Style uses meat from the whole hog. Western Style is also known as "Lexington Style". Lexington, North Carolina is home to several great barbecue restaurants.
By the way, I know that in many parts of the country "having a barbecue" is a popular term for inviting some people over and throwing some burgers and hotdogs on the grill. In North Carolina we call that a "cook out".
6. This sweet delight is found all over the country now, but it was created in North Carolina and is still headquartered there.

Answer: Krispy Kreme Donuts

Krispy Kreme opened in 1937 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina by Vernon Rudolph. Originally, he only sold his donuts to grocery stores but people started going to his bakery asking if they could buy them hot and fresh. He cut a hole in an outside wall and the rest is history.
7. This fried chicken restaurant opened their first store in North Carolina in 1977, although the name and menu might make you think they were from a different state.

Answer: Bojangles

Bojangles, headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina opened their first restaurant there in 1977 featuring spicy Cajun style chicken. They have grown to over 400 locations in over a dozen states.
8. This spicy snack is made in North Carolina's capital city of Raleigh and can be found in convenience stores all over the country.

Answer: Slim Jim

Now owned by the food giant ConAgra, every Slim Jim (a spicy beef stick) in the world is made in North Carolina.
9. Opening their first location in 1973 in Fayetteville, North Carolina this buffet style chain is headquartered in Raleigh.

Answer: Golden Corral

Since 1973 Golden Corral has grown to nearly 500 locations across the country. Fayetteville is home of Ft.Bragg, the 82nd Airborne, JFK Special Warfare Center and the elite Delta Force.

Answer: Capsicana Gourmet Zing Sauce

Capsicana Gourmet Zing Sauce is manufactured by a small company in eastern North Carolina and has limited distribution through select grocery and specialty shops, although it can be ordered on-line. Very tasty stuff!
