Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This British ice cream comes flavoured with a food we traditionally associate with breakfast. Can you name this flavour?

Answer: Bacon and eggs

This is also known as just plain bacon ice cream, and it sounds a little unappealing. Surely the idea of ice cream is something cold, creamy and sweet? So with this one we either have cold and salty ice cream OR bacon and eggs that are stone cold. Either way, my taste buds remain untempted.

This flavour, which started out as a joke in the old British comedy series "The Two Ronnies" (1971-1987), was eventually created for real by British chef, Heston Blumenthal, on April Fools Day for his restaurant.

He made a type of custard in the same way as scrambled eggs, added bacon bits and then froze it. The peculiar thing about this is that people liked the new flavour and it now appears as a regular dessert in other restaurants as well.
2. Don't break a leg thinking about this ice cream. Which one is it?

Answer: Bone Marrow with Bourbon Smoked Cherries

This ghastly sounding ice cream is an invention of the Salt and Straw ice cream company from Oregon in the United States, which opened up in 2011. All their ice creams are made by hand, and many of them have rather peculiar names to say the least. They include such treats as Strawberry balsamic and black pepper, Pear and blue cheese, and Freckled woodblock chocolate. One wouldn't know whether to sneeze, shudder, or check for splinters.
3. This staff of life ice cream would surely please any baker. Can you select the correct name?

Answer: Brown bread ice cream

Bread of course is a food known as the staff of life. Brown bread ice cream is a popular dish in New England and Canada. It is apparently also known as Grape-nut bread, but the connection between the two seems to be a little vague. It's been around for a long time though, having been created in Nova Scotia way back in 1919.

The story behind its creation is that a chef there ran out of fresh fruit when she was making ice cream for the restaurant at which she worked, and so threw in some cereal instead.

The flavour proved to be so popular that it was soon being mass-produced and sold throughout the entire area.
4. Many of the ladies on this site are quite possibly wedded to one of these. Can you name this ice cream?

Answer: Chubby Hubby

This ice cream with the rather endearing name wouldn't just make a hubby chubby. It'll add inches to the waistline of the whole family. Made by the famous dairy company, Ben and Jerry's, which was founded in the US in 1978, it consists of vanilla malt ice cream, fudge, peanut butter, pretzel nuggets covered in more fudge, and filled with more peanut butter again. Oh my goodness. To be completely successful if sold here in Australia, however, it would also need to have meat pie and beer added in as well - plus the flavouring of old football boots.
5. Perhaps this savoury ice cream was once very popular in Transylvania for keeping away the vampires. With what is it flavoured?

Answer: Garlic

Garlic ice cream? Hmm, I can hardly restrain myself. Oh wait, yes I can. Quite easily. Garlic ice cream springs from California, and really does come flavoured with this plant from the onion family, allium. Where are people coming up with these ideas? This treat was created in a San Francisco restaurant called, most unappealingly, "The Stinking Rose".

It is noted for including garlic in all its dishes.
6. Perhaps this ice cream will see you putting your limbs in and out on the dance floor, given its name. Which one is it?

Answer: Hokey pokey ice cream

The Hokey Pokey is a piece of dance fun that is many years old now, involving putting various limbs in, then, out, then shaking them all about. The ice cream of the same name doesn't come with one leg in and one leg out though. This is a New Zealand treat and is their second most sought after ice cream in the country, with vanilla being the first. Basically all it is, is ice cream through which pieces of yummy honeycomb have been swirled. Perhaps it doesn't sound as alluring as some of the other ices in this quiz, but until you've tasted New Zealand ice cream, you haven't taste ice cream at all.

It is truly delicious.
7. Does this ice cream have the ability to produce a valuable jewel? Which one is it?

Answer: Oyster ice cream

From the sublime to the ridiculous, we now have something as completely gross as oyster ice cream, which, to my real horror, actually comes flavoured with real slithery, slimy phlegmy looking oysters. I feel really queasy just thinking about it, and no power on earth would induce me to taste same. Believe it or not, this flavour has been around since 1824 when it first appeared in a cookbook published by one Mary Randolph in Virginia.

A footnote says this was a luxury treat that only the wealthy could afford. Thank goodness for poverty then.
8. You'll go "Up, up and away" with this ice cream flavour. Can you name it?

Answer: Superman ice cream

"Up, up and awayyyy" is a saying associated with the comic book hero, Superman, as he takes off from the ground to fly through the air. The ingredients in this taste treat are quite ordinary and safe - given some of the other flavoured ice creams in the quiz.

Called Superman ice cream because of the colour of that super hero's uniform, this ice cream is coloured red, blue and yellow. The accompanying flavours are usually cherry for the red, blue moon (marshmallow) for the blue, and lemon for the yellow.

There's no Kryptonite in this lot.
9. Like the animal itself, you'll roar with delight at this ice cream flavour. Which one is it?

Answer: Tiger tail ice cream

No tigers are harmed in the making of this ice cream, nor their appendages. Instead, this is a Canadian created treat, with ingredients of orange flavoured ice cream through which chunks of black licorice swirl. Sounds intriguing. Why, my stomach is growling just at the thought of it.
10. This is the largest and most calorie laden ice cream of all. What is its name?

Answer: Vermonster ice cream

Vermonster is another creation by Ben and Jerry, and you won't believe what goes into it. It's incredible. Ingredients are "20 scoops of ice cream, 4 bananas, 4 ladles of hot fudge, 3 chocolate chip cookies, 1 chocolate fudge brownie, 10 scoops of walnuts, 2 scoops each of 4 toppings of your choice, and whipped cream". My hips are expanding just thinking about that - and no wonder. Would you like to know the calorie content of this treat? Fourteen THOUSAND! No way would I eat that. My heart would give out. (What's that? Would I like a small sample? Oh well, perhaps just a little one. Oh please, be a little more generous than that. Perhaps a bowl full instead. No wait, I'll take the whole container instead if you don't mind - and a spoon).
