Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many of the quarters' reverse sides have either an outline or relief map of the state for which they're commemorating?

Answer: 15

Those states are:
Pennsylvania, Georgia, Massachusetts,
South Carolina, New York, Ohio,
Louisiana (it has a depressed, rough outline of the original Louisiana Purchase, then the state as it currently is offset a little more),
Indiana, Illinois, Michigan (with The Great Lakes),
Texas, Minnesota, Idaho, New Mexico, and Hawaii.
2. Which state's quarter has the image of a royal person on its reverse side?

Answer: Hawaii

Hawaii's quarter features King Kamehameha I reaching out over the Hawaiian Islands. The state motto, "UA MAU KE EA O KA 'AINA I KA PONO" is also on the back. It means, in English, "The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness." Hawaii's quarter's release date, near the end of 2008, is just a little over 49 years after it became a state.
3. How many of the states' quarters have an image of George Washington on both sides?

Answer: 2

New Jersey's quarter has a design based on the famous painting by Leutze, "Washington Crossing the Delaware".

South Dakota's quarter has, among other icons, the Mount Rushmore National Monument on its reverse. George Washington is one of the 4 presidents honored on that monument.
4. Regular quarters (pre-1999) have eagles on the reverse side. How many of the states' quarters have birds of any description on their reverse side?

Answer: 10

Pennsylvania - eagle atop the ribbon mace held by woman ("Commonwealth" statue atop Pennsylvania state house)
South Carolina - Carolina Wren
Louisiana - pelican
Maine - seagulls flying along coast
Arkansas - mallard duck taking off
California - California Condor
Minnesota - loon
South Dakota Chinese ring-necked pheasant
Idaho - Peregrine Falcon
Oklahoma - Scissortail Flycatcher.
5. Another animal on these quarters is the horse. How many of the states' quarters have a horse or horses on their reverse side?

Answer: 4

Delaware - Ceasar Rodney's horse
Kentucky - thoroughbred racehorse behind fence
Nevada - mustangs
Wyoming - bucking bronco.
6. How many states' quarters have an animal on the reverse that is neither a mammal nor a bird?

Answer: 2

The Alaska quarter's reverse has a grizzly bear with a salmon in its mouth.

The Washington quarter's reverse has King Salmon jumping out of a lake in front of Mt. Rainier.

All the other animals on the quarters are either birds (as listed in question 4 of this quiz) or mammals (horses, bison, cows, or people).
7. How many states' quarters feature a food item on the reverse side? (No animals, live or freshly killed).

Answer: 4

Georgia's has a peach over an outline of the state.

Vermont's has maple syrup being tapped out of trees.

Wisconsin's has a wheel of cheese and an ear of corn.

South Dakota's has wheat (the state grass; really) surrounding the depiction of Mt. Rushmore.
8. How many of the states' quarters have an image of a woman on the reverse side?

Answer: 4

Pennsylvania's has an image of the statue "Commonwealth", which sit atop its statehouse.

New York's has an image of the Statue of Liberty.

Alabama's features an image of Helen Keller. She was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama in 1880. When she was a child, an illness destroyed both her sight and hearing. Despite these setbacks, she still learned to speak, read (using Braille), and graduated with honors from Radcliffe with a Bachelor of Arts.

Iowa's features a reproduction of Grant Wood's painting "Arbor Day". It features small images of a woman and a girl planting a tree next to a 19th-century-style schoolhouse.
9. Many stars of various descriptions are on the reverse designs of the quarters. What is the grand total of the number of stars on all 50 quarters?

Answer: 70

Several states have stars indicating their admission order into the union: New Hampshire has 9, New York has 11, Indiana has 19, and Illinois has 21.

Two have symbolic stars for other reasons. Tennessee has 3 stars representing the 3 regions of the state, each with its own type of music. Texas has a single, large star, symbolizing its motto as "The Lone Star State".

Five states have the Sun on their quarters' designs. Four of them are the Sun on or near the horizon (tough to tell if they're setting or rising). New Mexico has a Zia Sun symbol atop the state's outline.

And finally, Alaska's design has a single star, representing the North Star.
10. How many state quarters have reverse designs which feature a man-made form of transportation?

Answer: 12

The following states' quarters have boats of some description: New Jersey has Gen. Washington's boat as he crossed the Delaware River; Virginia has the 3 ships that brought the first English settlers to North America - the Susan Constant, the Godspeed, and Discovery; Rhode Island has a sailboat on Narragansett Bay; Maine has a schooner near Pemaquid Point; Missouri has Lewis & Clark's expedition as they returned from their mission on the Missouri River; Florida has a 16th-century Spanish galleon; and Minnesota has a fishing boat on lake.

Three states have flying inventions. Both Ohio and North Carolina have an image of the Wright Flyer. The Wright Brothers were from Ohio, but tested their flyer on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, because of the near-constant breezes there. Florida, besides having the Spanish galleon, also has an image of a US space shuttle, which take-off from Cape Canaveral on the state's eastern coast.

Indiana has a racecar, symbolic of the Indianapolis 500 race.

Nebraska has a covered wagon transporting pioneers past the geologic formation Chimney Rock.

Utah's features two locomotives at the golden spike at Promontory Point, UT. This is where the railways of the eastern US and western US first were linked, in 1869.
